Two weeks later, the afternoon sun beamed brightly over the backyard lawn. The air was fresh and cool, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine flowers.
Lily ran across the green grass, her ginger hair bouncing in the breeze as she chased a small brown golden retriever puppy.
Lily: Come back, Barnaby! You can't catch me!
Sarah sat on the wooden porch bench, holding a mug of warm tea while watching her daughter laugh hysterically.
David walked out through the sliding glass doors, carrying a tray with fresh fruit and two glasses of lemonade.
Sarah: How did the meeting with the prosecutor go today?
David: Evelyn pleaded guilty to grand larceny and fraud. Because of her age and lack of prior record, the judge gave her five years of supervised probation, full restitution payments, and three hundred hours of community service.
Sarah: And Mark?
David: Mark fled the state when he heard the police were involved. The bank freeze went through, so he didn't get a single dime from Lily's account.
Sarah: What about the college trust fund?
David: My attorney managed to recover eighty percent of the stolen assets from Evelyn's personal accounts before she could transfer them out of the country. The rest will be repaid through the court restitution order.
Sarah rested her head on David's shoulder, taking a sip of her lemonade.
Sarah: Do you feel guilty about what happened?
David: For a few days, I did. But then I look at Lily, and I realize that protecting my child comes before anything else in this world.
Sarah: You saved her, David. You listened to her when nobody else would have taken her word over an adult's.
David: A child's truth is worth more than a thousand lies from people who claim to love you.
Lily came running up the porch steps, cradling the small golden retriever puppy in her arms.
Lily: Daddy! Look! Barnaby learned how to sit!
David: Did he really, sweetheart? Show me!
Lily set the puppy down on the wooden deck, holding up her small hand firmly.
Lily: Sit, Barnaby!
The little puppy wiggled its tail, plopping its hind legs onto the floor and barking once happily.
David laughed, kneeling down beside his daughter to pat the puppy's soft ears.
David: Good job, Barnaby! Good boy!
Lily wrapped her arms around her father's neck, pressing her cheek against his face.
Lily: Daddy?
David: Yes, Lily-bug?
Lily: Thank you for believing me about the purse.
David kissed her forehead softly, pulling her close against his chest as the summer sun began to dip behind the trees.
David: I will always believe you, Lily. Always.
