Evelyn: David, please... you can't involve the police! Think about the family reputation!
David: You didn't care about our family reputation when you tried to turn my daughter into a scapegoat!
Sarah: The police are already on the phone, David. Officer Miller is sending a patrol car right now.
Evelyn: Sarah, tell him to stop! I am an old woman! I won't survive a night in a jail cell!
Sarah: You should have thought about that before you put your hands on my child and stole from our home.
Lily clutched her father's grey sweater tightly, her small frame still trembling as she watched her grandmother crawl toward the front door.
Lily: Daddy, is Grandma going to take my room away?
David: No, sweetheart. Nobody is taking anything from you ever again.
Evelyn: David, listen to me! I did this because of the gambling debts! Your brother Mark owes two hundred thousand dollars to loan sharks in Atlantic City!
David stopped in his tracks, turning around slowly to face his mother.
David: What did you say?
Evelyn: Mark is in trouble, David! They threatened to break his legs if he didn't pay by the end of the month!
David: So you decided to rob me and steal my daughter's inheritance to cover Mark's illegal debts?
Evelyn: He is your brother! You have a successful software company! You have millions in the bank!
David: I worked eighty hours a week for ten years to build my business! Mark spent his entire life living off handouts from Dad's life insurance!
Evelyn: Family helps family, David!
David: You are not family. You are a predator living under my roof.
Sarah: David, look at these bank statements from her purse. She's been draining your father's estate trust account for six months.
David: How much is gone, Sarah?
Sarah: Over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The trust fund set aside for Lily's college education is completely empty.
A heavy, suffocating silence filled the bright room.
Lily looked up at her mother, her blue eyes wide with confusion.
Lily: Mommy, does that mean I can't go to school anymore?
Sarah: No, baby. You're going to school. Mommy and Daddy will make sure of it.
David walked over to the side table, taking his phone out of his pocket and dialing his attorney's direct line.
David: Arthur? This is David. I need you to freeze all joint accounts associated with my mother immediately.
Arthur: David? What happened? Is everything alright?
David: No. My mother stole property deeds, heirloom jewelry, and drained my daughter's trust fund. I am pressing full criminal charges.
Evelyn: No! David, don't do this! I am your mother!
David: Arthur, file a restraining order as well. Emergency status. She is never allowed within five hundred feet of my daughter again.
Arthur: Understood. I'll have the emergency petition filed at the courthouse within thirty minutes.
Evelyn slumped against the front entryway wall, her face pale and her hand still resting over her bruised, reddened cheek.
Outside, the faint sound of police sirens echoed down the quiet suburban street, growing louder with every passing second.
