David: Ma, if you didn't take anything, then you shouldn't have a problem with me looking inside.
Evelyn: It is a matter of respect, David! I am your mother, not a criminal line-up suspect!
David: A five-thousand-dollar heirloom ring went missing from Mom's nightstand half an hour ago.
Evelyn: And you're taking the word of a seven-year-old child over mine?
Lily: Daddy, I swear! I was coming out of the bathroom and I saw her put the velvet box in her bag!
Evelyn: She's making up stories to get attention because you've been working late all week!
Sarah: Evelyn, nobody is accusing you of anything yet. We just want to find the ring before the insurance appraiser arrives.
Evelyn: Stay out of this, Sarah! You're just the daughter-in-law here!
Sarah: I am David's wife, and this is our house!
Evelyn clutched her gold necklace tightly, her short grey hair stiff as she stood her ground in the center of the living room.
David: Sarah's right, Ma. This was my late grandmother's wedding ring. It's supposed to go to Lily when she turns eighteen.
Evelyn: And you think I would steal from my own granddaughter's trust fund inheritance?
Lily: She put it under the side flap, Daddy! Please look!
Evelyn: If you open that bag, David, you are officially telling me that I am no longer welcome in this home!
David: Ma, don't do this. Don't make this a test of loyalty.
Evelyn: I am giving you a choice right now. Trust your mother or trust a hysterical little girl.
David looked down at his daughter, whose ginger curls were sticking to her wet cheeks from crying so hard.
Lily: Daddy, please believe me. I didn't touch Great-Grammy's box.
Sarah: David, just open the bag and clear the air. If it's not in there, we apologize to your mother and search the rest of the house.
Evelyn: No! Nobody touches my purse!
Evelyn made a sudden move toward the table, reaching out her manicured hand to snatch the beige leather bag.
David was faster. He stepped into her path, placing his hand firmly over the handle of the purse.
David: Why are you so nervous, Ma?
Evelyn: I am not nervous! I am offended!
David: If your conscience is clean, your bag shouldn't hide any secrets.
Evelyn: You will regret this disrespect, David. I mean it!
David slowly pulled the bag toward his chest, ignoring his mother's glare as his fingers gripped the brass zipper pull.
The metallic sound of the zipper opening cut through the quiet room like a sharp knife.
He reached inside the deep leather compartment, pushing past a compact mirror, a wallet, and a set of car keys.
His fingers brushed against a soft, square object tucked deep into the side pocket.
He pulled out a navy blue velvet box, its gold latch glittering under the daylight.
Sarah gasped, covering her mouth with both hands as the rest of the family backed away in disbelief.
David: What is this, Ma?
Evelyn: I... I don't know how that got in there!
David: You told everyone Lily was a liar.
Evelyn: Someone planted it! That girl put it in my purse to frame me!
Evelyn's eyes widened in absolute terror and shock as her crime was exposed in front of everyone.
Lily: I didn't touch it! I didn't!
David: Shut up, Evelyn!
A wave of explosive rage washed over David's face as he stepped forward, his fists trembling at his sides.
Before Evelyn could take another breath to defend herself, David raised his right hand and delivered a powerful, heavy slap directly across her face.
The sharp sound of the impact echoed off the white walls, followed by a collective scream from the family.
