The sound of red and blue flashing lights reflected off the polished floors of the living room as two uniformed police officers stepped through the open front door.
Officer Miller: Mr. Sterling? We received a dispatch call regarding domestic theft and child endangerment.
David: Officer, thank you for coming so quickly. That woman on the floor is my mother, Evelyn Sterling.
Evelyn: Officer, this is a family dispute! My son lost his temper and struck me across the face! Look at my cheek!
Officer Miller looked at the red imprint on Evelyn's face, then turned his gaze toward David.
Officer Miller: Sir, did you hit her?
David: Yes, I did. She screamed at my seven-year-old daughter, called her a liar, and tried to attack her to cover up a felony theft.
Sarah: Officer, we have high-definition security cameras installed in the ceiling corners of this room. Everything was recorded on audio and video.
Evelyn's jaw dropped as she looked up at the small black dome cameras mounted near the crown molding.
Evelyn: You... you have cameras in here?
Sarah: We installed them two months ago when items started going missing from the master bedroom.
Officer Miller: Ma'am, please stand up.
Evelyn: I am sixty-eight years old! You can't treat me like a common criminal!
Officer Miller: Age doesn't grant immunity from the law, ma'am. Please stand up, or my partner will assist you.
The second officer stepped forward, grabbing Evelyn gently but firmly by the arms and hoisting her off the floor.
Evelyn: David! Tell them to stop! Tell them it was a mistake!
David: The only mistake I made was letting you near my daughter.
Officer Miller: Evelyn Sterling, you are under arrest for grand larceny, forgery, and child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent.
Evelyn: Mark will kill himself if he doesn't get that money! You're destroying your own brother!
David: Mark destroyed himself years ago. And you enabled him until you turned into a thief yourself.
The officer pulled Evelyn's hands behind her back, clicking the steel handcuffs securely around her wrists.
She whimpered in pain, her pride completely shattered as the family members she had tried to manipulate watched her in cold silence.
Evelyn: Lily... Lily, tell your daddy to stop them! Tell him Grandma loves you!
Lily tucked her head deeper into her father's neck, refusing to look at the woman being led out the door.
Lily: Grandmas don't lock kids in dark closets.
The front door clicked shut as the officers led Evelyn down the driveway toward the waiting patrol car.
David exhaled a long, heavy breath, feeling the tension slowly leave his chest for the first time in months.
He looked at Sarah, who was holding the stolen diamond box in her trembling hands.
Sarah: Is it really over, David?
David: It's over, Sarah. She's never coming back here again.
