The Maid Who Sang The Forbidden Lullaby

The cold marble floor of the grand foyer offered no comfort to Sarah as she held the two young boys close to her chest. Dressed in her simple black-and-white maid uniform, she squeezed seven-year-old Leo and five-year-old Toby, their white pajamas soaking up her falling tears. The boys were sobbing hysterically, their tiny hands clutching her apron as if she were the only safe thing in the world.

Leo: Don't leave us, please! Stay with us tonight!

Sarah: I have to go soon, sweetheart. You know I can't stay after my shift ends.

Toby: But we're scared! The big house is too quiet when you leave!

Sarah: Shh, quiet now. Look at me, my sweet boys. You need to be brave for me.

Sarah's heart pounded against her ribs as she wiped a stray tear from Leo's cheek. She had taken this job as a live-out housekeeper six months ago, swearing to keep her distance and just clean the massive estate. But the moment she saw the boys, she couldn't stop herself from loving them. The heavy, gold-trimmed front doors suddenly slammed open, cutting through the sound of the children's crying.

Andrew: What on earth is going on here?!

Evelyn: Andrew, please! Calm down before you scare them!

Andrew: Why are my sons calling you mommy?!

Andrew stood in the entryway, his tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, his eyes blazing with furious confusion as he pointed an angry finger at Sarah. Evelyn, wearing an elegant blue gown, hovered right behind him with a pale, shocked face. The two boys shrank back, burying their faces deeper into Sarah's apron.

Sarah: Sir, I was just trying to calm them down—

Andrew: Don't lie to me! I heard them from the hallway! Why did they just call you mommy?

Evelyn: Andrew, she's just a maid! You're making a scene over nothing!

Toby: No, she's more like mommy... sings us the same song!

Toby's trembling voice echoed off the high ceilings as he looked up with tear-filled eyes. The room went completely dead silent. Andrew stopped mid-stride, his angry expression turning pale as the harsh light hit his face. Sarah closed her eyes, a soft, heartbroken whisper slipping past her lips as the secret she kept hidden for seven long years finally shattered around them.

Sarah: I shouldn't have come inside.
