The Locks Were Changed

The Cold Betrayal In The Snow banner

Beatrice: David! Have you lost your mind?! You just assaulted your own father!

David: Shut your mouth, Beatrice! Shut it right now!

Arthur: You... you hit me... in my own home...

David: This isn't your home, Arthur! My mother left this estate solely in my name! You are a guest here!

Emma: David... please... the baby...

David dropped back down to his knees beside the sofa, his broad hands carefully checking Emma's face and arms. Tears welled up in her eyes, her teeth still clicking together from the cold.

David: I'm right here, sweetheart. I'm right here. How long were you out there?

Emma: Over two hours... David, I knocked on the glass... I begged them to let me in...

David: Two hours in sub-zero weather while she's six months pregnant with our second child?!

David whipped his head around toward Arthur, who was slowly pushing himself up from the cold floor, wiping blood from his lip.

Arthur: She had no right to be in this house, David! She isn't fit to bear the Vance name!

David: She is my wife! She is the mother of my children!

Arthur: She's a nobody! A kindergarten teacher with no family pedigree! When you deployed overseas, I made it very clear she was no longer welcome on this property!

David: I sent money every single month! I transferred thirty thousand dollars to the house maintenance account to make sure she was taken care of!

Beatrice: That money was spent where it belonged, David! On maintaining the family's social standing! On the estate taxes!

Emma: They... they changed the locks on the front door three days ago, David... I came back from the doctor's appointment and my key wouldn't work...

David: You locked a pregnant woman out of her own house three days ago?! Where were you sleeping, Emma?

Emma: In the old wooden tool shed by the garden... with a small space heater... but the power cut out an hour ago...

David felt a deep, dark sickness wash over his chest. He looked at his father, who was leaning against the grand piano, trying to fix his ruined brown suit jacket.

David: You forced my wife and newborn baby to sleep in an unheated shed in the middle of a blizzard?

Arthur: I offered her a bus ticket back to her small town in Ohio! She refused to sign the divorce papers I had my lawyer draft!

David: Divorce papers?! What divorce papers?!

Arthur: The papers that sever her from the Vance family trust! I will not allow our multi-million dollar inheritance to be passed down to a child born from a commoner!

David: You drafted divorce papers while I was on active military deployment overseas?!

Beatrice: It was for your own good, David! You were tricked into this marriage!

David: I married the woman I love! You two are nothing but parasitic vultures living off my mother's legacy!

Arthur: Watch your tone, boy! I am still your father!

David: You ceased being my father the moment you left my wife to freeze outside in the snow!

David pulled out his military satellite phone from his tactical vest, his thumb flying across the keypad.

Arthur: Who are you calling?

David: I'm calling the police, and then I'm calling my lawyer. You have five minutes to grab your coats and get off my land before you leave in handcuffs.

Beatrice: You can't kick us out! We have a legal residency agreement!

David: That agreement was contingent on my mother's will, Beatrice. A will that gives me total authority over this property. Four minutes and fifty seconds.

Arthur: You think you can ruin me, David? I control the family business accounts!

David: You don't control anything anymore, Arthur. Not after what I found out before my flight landed today.
