The freezing winter wind howled through the open yard, kicking up thick gusts of white snow. Captain David Vance sprinted through the deep drifts, his army boots sinking into the ice. His eyes locked onto a shivering figure huddled in the corner near the stone fence. It was his six-month pregnant wife, Emma, clutching their tiny newborn baby against her chest, her lips pale blue and her entire body trembling violently from the freezing cold.
David: EMMA! YOU'RE FREEZING!
David dropped to his knees in the snow, immediately unzipping his heavy military winter coat and wrapping it tightly around Emma and the tiny baby bundled in her arms.
Emma: David... you're home... you made it home...
David: Shh, don't talk. Why are you outside in the snow? Why aren't you inside the house?
Emma: They... they wouldn't let me stay inside...
David looked up at the massive glass windows of his family's multi-million dollar luxury mansion just a few feet away. Inside the brightly lit, warm living room, his father, Arthur Vance, stood holding a glass of expensive red wine, casually chatting with David's stepmother, Beatrice. Warm light spilled across the marble floors inside, while outside, Emma's fingers were stiff and dark with ice.
David: Hold on to me. I've got you.
David carefully gathered his wife and newborn into his arms, lifting them off the frozen ground. His heart hammered in his chest, fury boiling through his veins as he carried them quickly toward the front entrance. He kicked the heavy mahogany doors wide open, stepping into the heated foyer.
He carried Emma straight into the bright, white-walled living room and laid her down gently on the plush leather sofa. The baby whimpered softly, pulling David's heart into a tight knot. He pulled a warm cashmere blanket off the armchair, wrapping it over Emma before slowly turning around. His fists were clenched so tight his knuckles turned white.
David: WHO DID THIS TO HER?!
Arthur didn't even flinch. He took a slow sip from his wine glass, a cold, arrogant smirk spreading across his face as he stepped forward onto the polished floor. He looked at David with complete contempt.
Arthur: I DID IT! SHE IS NOT FAMILY ANYMORE!
David snapped. The three years of deployed service, the miles of separation, and the pure horror of seeing his pregnant wife dying in the snow exploded all at once. Before Arthur could raise his glass again, David lunged forward, his face twisted in pure rage, his hand swinging back with every ounce of military power he possessed. The strike landed with a deafening crack, sending the wine glass shattering across the white marble wall. The force knocked Arthur completely off his feet, sending him crashing onto the floor. David stepped over his groaning father, pointing a trembling finger toward the open front door, clutching his wife and baby tight.
David: GET OUT OF MY HOUSE NOW!
Arthur lay on his back, clutching his swollen jaw while Beatrice screamed in horror, but the nightmare threatening David's family was only beginning.
