The Courtroom Showdown

My Husband Slapped Me For His Mother So I Flipped The Dining Table banner

Three months later, the marble corridors of the County Superior Court were filled with journalists and legal teams. I stood outside Courtroom 4B wearing a sharp black business suit, flanked by Arthur and my best friend, Nina.

Nina: You look incredible, Clara. Ready to end this once and for all?

Clara: I've been ready for three months, Nina.

The heavy double doors opened, and Brandon walked down the hallway wearing a cheap, ill-fitting suit. His hair was messy, his eyes sunken with dark circles, and his posture completely slumped. Beside him walked Eleanor, looking pale and thoroughly defeated in a faded dress.

When Brandon saw me standing tall beside my legal team, he took a hesitant step forward.

Brandon: Clara... please. Can we talk before the judge comes in?

Arthur: Step back, Mr. Vance. You are violating the protective order by approaching my client.

Brandon: I just want to ask for forgiveness, Arthur! Please!

Clara: Forgiveness, Brandon? You tried to steal my family's entire trust fund and frame me for domestic destruction.

Brandon: My public defender says I'm looking at three to five years in state prison, Clara! Please, tell the prosecutor to drop the grand larceny charge! I'll sign the divorce papers right now!

Clara: You should have thought about prison three months ago when you raised your hand against me in my dining room.

Eleanor: You cold-hearted snake! You destroyed my son's entire life!

Clara: Your son destroyed his own life the moment he decided to be your accomplice instead of a real husband, Eleanor. Save your tears for the judge.

The court bailiff stepped out into the hallway, calling out loudly.

Bailiff: Case number 5082, Sterling versus Vance! All parties enter the courtroom now!

We walked into the brightly lit courtroom. Judge Margaret Reynolds took her place at the elevated bench, looking down at the legal documents piled before her.

Judge Reynolds: We are here for the final disposition of divorce proceedings and civil restitution regarding the Sterling Family Trust. Counsel, state your appearances.

Arthur: Arthur Pendelton, representing the petitioner, Clara Sterling.

Public Defender: Marcus Vance, court-appointed defense for Brandon Vance and Eleanor Vance.

Judge Reynolds: Having reviewed the bank forensics, police battery reports, and confession statements submitted by the defense, this court finds overwhelming evidence of grand fraud, domestic assault, and systematic financial conversion.

Brandon buried his face in his hands at the defense table, trembling visibly.

Judge Reynolds: The marriage between Clara Sterling and Brandon Vance is hereby dissolved immediately on fault grounds. All claims by the respondent for spousal support, property division, or legal fee coverage are denied with prejudice.

Public Defender: Your Honor, my clients request leniency regarding civil restitution...

Judge Reynolds: Request denied. The court orders the immediate forfeiture of the property registered under 'E.V. Holdings LLC' in Miami, Florida, with full proceeds transferred back to the Sterling Trust. Furthermore, Brandon Vance and Eleanor Vance are ordered to pay two hundred and forty thousand dollars in civil restitution.

Eleanor: We don't have that kind of money! We're broke!

Judge Reynolds: Silence in my courtroom, ma'am! If you cannot pay the civil judgment, the state will place tax liens on all future wages and personal property. Furthermore, both respondents are remanded into custody pending their criminal trial next Tuesday.

Two armed court officers stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Brandon's and Eleanor's wrists right at the defense table.

Brandon: Clara! Clara, please help me! Tell them you forgive me!

I stood up from my desk, looking Brandon straight in the eye as the bailiffs pulled him toward the side exit.

Clara: I forgive myself for staying with you as long as I did, Brandon. But as for you? You can ask your mother for forgiveness in prison.
