The Secret Ledger

My Husband Slapped Me For His Mother So I Flipped The Dining Table banner

Two days after Brandon and his mother were removed from my property, I sat in my spacious living room with Arthur and an independent forensic accountant named Sarah Jenkins. The ruined dining room table had been cleared away, replaced by a beautiful new glass centerpiece.

Sarah: Mrs. Vance—or rather, Miss Sterling—we completed the full audit of your joint bank statements and Brandon's accounting firm ledger this morning.

Clara: What did you discover, Sarah?

Sarah: It's much worse than a simple matter of unauthorized personal spending. Over the last eighteen months, Brandon transferred over two hundred thousand dollars from your family trust into a shell company registered in his mother's name.

Clara: Two hundred thousand dollars?!

Arthur: That explains why Eleanor was so insistent on staying in your home, Clara. She wasn't just visiting; she was acting as a co-conspirator in an ongoing wire fraud scheme.

Clara: They were actively stealing from my family trust while living in my house?

Sarah: Exactly. The shell company, registered as 'E.V. Holdings LLC', was created for the sole purpose of purchasing a luxury condo in downtown Miami.

Clara: A condo in Miami?!

Sarah: Yes. The down payment was wire-transferred four weeks ago, using funds Brandon diverted from your quarterly inheritance distribution.

I felt a surge of cold fury coursing through my veins. All those times Eleanor made me feel small, complaining about lukewarm tea and dust on the shelves, she was actively embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from my family.

Clara: Arthur, can we prosecute them for this?

Arthur: Prosecute them? Clara, this is federal bank fraud and grand larceny. With these bank records and Sarah's forensic report, the State Prosecutor will file formal felony charges by tomorrow afternoon.

Clara: Do it, Arthur. I want every penny recovered, and I want both of them held fully accountable by the court.

Arthur: What about the divorce proceedings?

Clara: File for an immediate fault-based divorce on the grounds of domestic abuse and grand fraud. I don't want him to get a single dime of spousal support.

Arthur: Under state law, a felony conviction against a spouse automatically forfeits all rights to marital property division or spousal maintenance. Brandon will leave this marriage with zero dollars and a criminal record.

My phone rang on the glass coffee table. The caller ID showed a number from a cheap extended-stay motel on the outskirts of town. I put the call on speakerphone.

Clara: Hello, Brandon.

Brandon: Clara! Please, you have to talk to me! My mother and I are staying in a horrible room with roaches! We don't have enough money for food!

Clara: That's funny, Brandon. I thought you had plenty of money stored away in 'E.V. Holdings LLC'.

The line went completely dead silent for five long seconds.

Brandon: How... how do you know about that name?

Clara: My forensic accountant spent the morning reviewing your paper trail, Brandon. Did you really think you could embezzle two hundred thousand dollars from my family trust without anyone noticing?

Brandon: Clara, listen to me! That was my mother's idea! She told me we needed a backup plan in case your father ever changed his will!

Eleanor: Brandon! Give me that phone!

I heard the frantic scuffle of phone receiver noises over the speaker before Eleanor's shrill voice came through the line.

Eleanor: You listen to me, you arrogant little brat! That money belongs to my son for enduring three years of marriage with a low-class girl like you!

Clara: Keep talking, Eleanor. My lawyer is sitting right here recording this call.

Eleanor: I don't care about your lawyer! If you don't release our bank accounts by five o'clock, I will go to the newspapers and ruin your family's reputation!

Clara: You won't be going to the newspapers, Eleanor. You'll be meeting with the state prosecutor tomorrow morning. Have a wonderful evening at your motel.

I pressed the red end button, terminating the call before she could scream another word.
