The bright morning sun streamed through the large window, illuminating the white walls of our high-end dining room. Plates of French toast and hot coffee sat untouched on the elegant wooden table. I tried to swallow the lump in my throat as my mother-in-law, Eleanor, took a slow, deliberate sip of her tea.
Eleanor: The tea is lukewarm, Brandon. Just like everything else your wife attempts to make in this home.
Brandon: Mom is right, Clara. You knew she wanted her breakfast served precisely at eight o'clock.
Clara: Brandon, I set the pot down three minutes ago. It's boiling hot.
Brandon: Don't talk back to her, Clara! Show some respect!
Clara: I've been cooking and cleaning since six this morning while she sat on the couch complaining!
Brandon's eyes flashed with sudden rage. He lunged across the corner of the table, grabbing my face aggressively with his large hand, his fingers digging hard into my jawline.
Brandon: APOLOGIZE TO MY MOTHER RIGHT NOW, YOU USELESS WIFE!
Clara: Let go of me, Brandon! You're hurting me!
Eleanor: Teach her a lesson, Brandon. She thinks she owns this house just because her name is on the marriage certificate.
Brandon: You heard my mother! Apologize!
Clara: Never! I did nothing wrong!
Before I could pull away, Brandon raised his broad palm and forcefully slapped me hard across the cheek. The sharp impact cracked through the silent room, sending a fiery sting burning across my skin.
I reeled back, clutching my reddened cheek as hot tears filled my eyes. Eleanor smirked behind her teacup. But as the burning pain settled, something deep inside me snapped into pure, icy fury.
I stood up tall, grabbed the edge of the heavy wooden dining table, and abruptly flipped it over. Plates, porcelain cups, and hot coffee crashed violently onto the white marble floor, shattering into a million pieces.
Eleanor: Oh my sweet heaven!
I lunged forward across the broken mess and delivered a hard, stinging slap directly across Brandon's face.
Brandon: WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING?!
Clara: STAY WITH YOUR MOTHER! I AM LEAVING FROM HERE!
I grabbed my handbag off the chair, turned around, and marched toward the front door, leaving Brandon and his mother standing in total, stunned humiliation amidst the ruined food.
