The heavy front door clicked shut as Mark stepped into the entryway of his suburban home.
He carried two heavy grocery bags, expecting the quiet warmth of a normal Monday afternoon.
Instead, the sound of running water in the kitchen was drowned out by heavy, breathless crying.
Mark dropped the groceries onto the floor, the paper bags tearing as cans rolled across the tile.
Mark: Sarah?
He hurried toward the kitchen archway, stopping dead in his tracks.
His wife was standing by the sink, trembling violently from head to toe.
She held their six-month-old baby girl tightly against her shoulder with one arm.
Her other arm was covered in dish soap, scrubbing a pile of greasy pots under the running faucet.
Her clothes were soaked with water, and her face was pale, exhausted, and streaked with fresh tears.
Mark: What are you doing? Why are you crying like this?
Sarah: Mark... you're home early.
Mark: Look at you! You can barely stand up!
Mark rushed across the kitchen floor and reached out to take the baby from her arms.
As he gently moved her damp hair out of the way, his heart stopped in total disbelief.
A deep red bruise stretched across Sarah's cheekbone, and her lower lip was swollen and split.
Mark: Who did this to you?!
Sarah: Please... don't make a scene...
Mark: Who put their hands on you in my house?!
Sarah held the baby tighter, her whole body shaking as she looked up at him with tear-filled eyes.
Sarah: IT WAS YOUR STEPMOTHER... SHE MADE ME DO ALL THIS!
The sound of sharp high heels suddenly clicked against the hard wood floor of the hallway.
Mark turned around as his wealthy stepmother, Evelyn, walked into the kitchen with a glass of juice in her hand.
She sneered at Sarah, completely ignoring Mark's furious expression.
Evelyn: IN THIS HOUSE, I MAKE THE RULES!
Mark didn't hesitate for a single second.
He stepped forward in pure fury and slapped Evelyn violently across the face.
The sharp sound echoed off the kitchen walls as Evelyn stumbled backward, dropping her glass to the floor.
She gripped her bright red cheek in utter shock, but Mark didn't stop there.
Mark: GET OUT OF MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW!
Evelyn gasped, her eyes wide with outrage, but Mark was already marching toward her, pointing directly at the front door with a cold, dangerous promise in his eyes.
