Three days after the ruined wedding, Chloe sat inside the cozy kitchen of her family's small suburban home.
The smell of fresh bread filled the air as her father, Thomas, poured two mugs of black coffee at the wooden table.
Thomas: You two handled yourselves with a lot of grace, sweetheart.
Chloe: It didn't feel graceful, dad. It felt like a war.
Thomas: Standing up for your dignity is never easy, especially against people with that kind of money.
The front door opened, and Julian walked in carrying a stack of legal documents and a dark laptop bag.
He wore a simple denim shirt and jeans, looking more relaxed than Chloe had ever seen him.
Chloe: How did the meeting with your private attorney go, Julian?
Julian: Better than expected. Mr. Miller reviewed all the paperwork my mother tried to force you to sign.
Thomas: Was that contract even legal?
Julian: Not even close. It was full of illegal clauses regarding forced financial surrender and asset forfeiture under duress.
Chloe: Did your mother really think a court would enforce that?
Julian: She thought you would be too scared to ever show it to a real lawyer. She counted on your silence.
Thomas: Well, she clearly picked the wrong girl to mess with.
Julian: That's not all, Chloe. Mr. Miller did a deep check on the family trust fund accounts this morning.
Chloe set her coffee mug down, leaning forward in her chair.
Chloe: What did he find?
Julian: My mother didn't just target you because she thought you were poor. She targeted you because she needed a scapegoat.
Chloe: A scapegoat for what?
Julian: My mother has been secretly draining funds from the Vance charitable foundation for the last three years to cover her personal offshore investments.
Thomas let out a low whistle, shaking his head in disbelief.
Thomas: She was stealing from her own charity?
Julian: Nearly three million dollars is missing. She was planning to blame the missing money on a fraudulent transfer through your father's bakery account after you signed that contract!
Chloe gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in shock.
Chloe: She was going to frame my father for embezzlement?!
Julian: That's why she brought her private lawyer to your house, Chloe. The contract contained a hidden clause admitting that your father received business loans from the charity trust!
Thomas: That vile woman... she was going to ruin my reputation and send me to prison just to save her own skin!
Julian: I won't let her get away with it, Mr. Davis. We're handing all these documents over to the state prosecutor's office this afternoon.
Chloe: Julian... if you do that, your mother could go to federal prison.
Julian looked Chloe straight in the eyes, his expression cold and resolute.
Julian: She tried to destroy an innocent family to cover her own crimes. She deserves whatever sentence the law gives her.
