The bright blue and red police lights flashed through the kitchen windows, casting spinning shadows across the white cabinets. Heavy boots slammed against the front porch outside, followed by loud, authoritative pounding on the solid oak door.
Officer Miller: Police department! Open the door!
Sarah: It's open! In the kitchen! Please hurry!
The front door burst open, and three armed officers moved quickly down the hallway, their flashlights cutting through the dim house. They entered the kitchen with weapons drawn, sweeping the room in a single second.
Officer Miller: Hands where we can see them! Nobody move!
Mark: Officer, help me! My eyes... my son sprayed chemicals in my eyes!
Officer Vance: Stay down on the floor, sir! Don't move!
Officer Vance stepped over the fallen bar stool, kneeling onto Mark's back and securing his hands behind him with heavy plastic zip-ties.
Mark: Ow! You're hurting my wrists! I'm the owner of this house! She attacked me!
Officer Vance: Keep quiet, sir. You have the right to remain silent.
Officer Miller holstered his weapon and quickly dropped to one knee beside Sarah and Leo, checking Sarah's swollen, discolored ankle.
Officer Miller: Ma'am, don't try to move. Paramedics are right behind us. Are you two alright?
Sarah: My son saved my life, Officer. Mark threw me down the stairs when I tried to take Leo and leave.
Officer Miller: Did he strike the child?
Leo: He tried to hit me, but I sprayed the oven cleaner in his face!
Officer Miller: You're a brave young man, son. You protected your mom real good.
Two paramedics rushed into the kitchen carrying a stretcher and a large orange medical kit.
Paramedic Davis: We need to flush the subject's eyes with saline immediately, and let me get a splint on this woman's leg.
Mark: She's lying, Officer! She's trying to take my trust fund and my company shares in a divorce!
Sarah: I don't want your money, Mark. I just want my son and my freedom.
Officer Vance: Stand up, sir. You're coming with us to the precinct.
Officer Vance pulled Mark up by his arms. Mark's face was covered in red streaks, his eyes swollen shut and watering constantly as he stumbled toward the hallway.
Mark: You won't get a single dollar, Sarah! My divorce lawyer will strip you of custody by tomorrow morning!
Sarah: Try it, Mark. The security cameras in the hallway recorded every single second of what you did.
Mark froze for a fraction of a second, his pale face turning completely white as he realized the wall camera had been active the entire night.
Mark: What... what camera?
Sarah: The one I installed last week after you threatened to ruin my family business. It streams straight to a private cloud server.
Officer Vance: Move it, Mr. Vance. You can explain your story to the judge.
They dragged Mark out through the front entrance, his frantic shouting fading into the cool night air as the police cruiser door slammed shut.
Paramedic Davis: Ma'am, we're going to lift you onto the gurney now. Hold onto your son.
Sarah: Leo, come with me in the ambulance.
Leo: I'm right here, Mommy. I'm never letting go.
