The Panic On The Floor

The Kitchen Counterattack banner

Sarah: Leo, run! Get out of the house!

Leo: I'm not leaving you, Mommy!

Leo held the aerosol spray cans tightly in both hands, pointing the nozzles directly at Mark's face as the man reached for him.

Mark: Get out of my way, kid!

Leo: Stay away from me!

Leo pressed both triggers down with all his strength. A loud, continuous hiss filled the kitchen as dense clouds of chemical spray hit Mark directly in the eyes and nose.

Mark: Aagh! My eyes! My face!

Mark dropped to his knees, clutching his face with both hands as loud screams of pain echoed off the kitchen walls. He stumbled blindly, knocking over a bar stool before collapsing heavily onto the floor.

Leo: Don't touch my mom!

Sarah: Leo... oh God, Leo...

Leo dropped the empty cans onto the floor and rushed over to Sarah, dropping to his knees beside her blue silk robe.

Leo: Mommy, are you okay? Can you stand up?

Sarah: I... I think my ankle is broken, sweetie. You were so brave.

Leo: He can't open his eyes. I sprayed him real good.

Mark let out a ragged groan on the floor a few feet away, coughing and thrashing his arms blindly.

Mark: You little monster... I'm going to kill you both when I get up!

Sarah: Leo, grab my purse off the counter. Get my phone.

Leo: I have it, Mommy. It was on the shelf by the keypad.

Leo handed the smartphone to Sarah with shaking hands. Sarah quickly swiped the screen, her fingers slippery with cold sweat as she dialed nine-one-one.

Dispatcher: Nine-one-one, what is your emergency?

Sarah: I need police and an ambulance at 412 Oakridge Drive right now! My husband attacked us!

Dispatcher: Ma'am, stay calm. Is the attacker armed?

Sarah: He's on the floor, but he's trying to stand up! Please hurry, my son is here!

Dispatcher: Officers are on their way. Stay on the line with me. Is there a safe room you can lock yourselves in?

Mark: Sarah... give me the phone... you don't know what you're doing...

Sarah: Stay back, Mark! Don't you dare come near us!

Leo: Mommy, look at his hand! He's reaching for the chair leg!

Mark blindly swung out an arm, grabbing the wooden leg of the fallen bar stool, his face red and swollen from the harsh chemical fumes.

Mark: You think the police care about you? This is my estate! Everything in this house is under my name!

Sarah: Not anymore, Mark. You just crossed the line in front of our son.

Mark: I built this life for us! I paid for your car, your clothes, your medical bills!

Sarah: You didn't build anything, Mark. You controlled us. And today it ends.

Dispatcher: Ma'am, the patrol units are turning onto your street now. Keep your boy behind you.

Sarah: Leo, get behind my back. Don't look at him.

Leo: I'm holding your hand, Mommy. I won't let him hurt you again.

The faint wail of sirens began to echo from the street outside, getting louder and closer with every second.

Mark: Sarah... please... tell them it was an accident. We can fix this!

Sarah: There is nothing left to fix, Mark. You are going to prison.
