Six months later, the afternoon sun flooded the local park. Kids were running across the green grass, playing on the swings and slides while parents sat on wooden benches nearby.
Mark sat on a blanket under a large oak tree, working on his tablet while watching Lily play happily on the jungle gym with her school friends.
Best Man: Hey man! Mind if I join you?
Mark looked up to see his best man, Dave, walking across the grass carrying two cold iced coffees.
Mark: Hey Dave! Sit down. Thanks for the coffee.
Best Man: How is the new engineering project going?
Mark: Incredible. We just expanded our office downtown, and we hired three new junior engineers last week.
Best Man: That's amazing! Have you heard anything from Chloe lately?
Mark: Not a word. Her father told me she moved to another city to live quietly after her reputation in town was ruined.
Best Man: Good riddance. People still talk about the wedding scene, you know. Everyone says you're a hero for walking away.
Mark: I'm no hero, Dave. I'm just a dad who loves his kid.
Lily came running across the grass, her pigtails bouncing as she held up a bright yellow dandelion she had picked from the lawn.
Lily: Daddy! Look what I found for you!
Mark: Wow, sweetie! That is the prettiest flower in the whole park!
Lily: Make a wish, Daddy!
Mark closed his eyes for a second, feeling the warm summer breeze against his face and the peaceful quiet of his daughter's joyful laugh.
Mark: I don't need to make a wish, Lily. Everything I could ever want is right here with me.
Lily: Can we get ice cream after this?
Mark: Strawberry with three scoops?
Lily: Yes! You're the best daddy in the whole world!
Lily hugged his neck tightly before running back toward the playground to join her friends. Mark watched her go, a genuine, happy smile spreading across his face.
He knew the road ahead wouldn't always be easy, but as he looked down at the gold locket resting safely against his daughter's dress in the sunlight, he knew they had built a future on truth, love, and unwavering protection.
