Public Scene at the Altar

The Hidden Child At The Luxury Wedding banner

The double doors of the main sanctuary swung open, and Mark walked straight down the center aisle holding Lily. The background music stopped abruptly as two hundred wealthy guests turned in their seats to stare.

Best Man: Mark? What's going on, man? Where is Chloe?

Mark: The wedding is canceled. Everyone please leave.

A wave of loud gasps swept through the church. People began whispering behind their hands, pointing at Mark's bare left hand and his crying daughter.

Guest 1: Did he just cancel the wedding?! Right before the vows?!

Guest 2: Look at the child... what happened back there?

Chloe came running into the sanctuary behind him, her heavy lace train dragging across the carpet as she shouted at the top of her lungs.

Chloe: Don't listen to him! Mark is having a nervous breakdown!

Mark: Tell them the truth, Chloe! Tell them where I found my daughter two minutes ago!

Chloe: I was protecting the schedule! You were letting a child ruin our special day!

Mark: She locked a motherless seven-year-old girl in a dark storage room and told her she wasn't family anymore!

The crowd went dead silent. Several women in the front rows gasped in horror, looking at Chloe with total disgust.

Chloe's Father: Chloe... is this true?

Chloe: Dad, she was crying and her hands were dirty! She was going to ruin my dress!

Chloe's Father: You locked a child in a closet on your wedding day?! Have you lost your mind?!

Chloe: You are supposed to take my side! I am your daughter!

Chloe's Father: I am a grandfather, Chloe! That is a little girl!

Chloe stood in the center aisle, her expensive makeup running down her cheeks as her own family turned their backs on her in front of the entire town.

Mark: My daughter lost her mother to cancer two years ago. I promised her I would always protect her. I almost broke that promise today.

Lily: I love you, Daddy.

Mark: I love you too, sweetie. More than anything in this world.

Mark walked past the altar, past the stunned pastor, and straight out the side doors into the bright afternoon sunlight. He didn't look back once as Chloe's screams of anger echoed inside the church behind him.

Best Man: Mark, wait up!

Mark stopped near his car as his best man ran out into the parking lot, catching his breath.

Best Man: That took serious guts, man. I had no idea Chloe was like that.

Mark: Neither did I. She hid it well until she thought she had total control over us.

Best Man: What are you going to do about your company's contract with her father?

Mark: I'll figure it out. My daughter's safety is worth more than any corporate partnership.
