The heavy grandfather clock in the foyer began to chime, marking two o'clock in the afternoon.
Claire stood near the front entrance with her arms crossed, watching as two hired movers carried Evelyn's large suitcases down the grand staircase.
Evelyn walked down behind them, wearing a plain gray coat over her navy dress, her face drawn and tired.
Richard: The car is waiting for you outside, Evelyn. I've set up a room for you at the Grand Hotel while we finalize your apartment lease.
Evelyn didn't look at Richard. She kept her eyes fixed on Claire as she reached the bottom step.
Evelyn: You think you've won, don't you?
Claire: This wasn't a game to me, Evelyn. It was about protecting my child.
Evelyn: You stole my son's legacy.
Claire: Your son gave his legacy to the boy he loved. You're the one who threw it away the moment you decided to be cruel.
Toby stepped out from behind the living room curtain, holding his favorite wooden toy car in his hand. He looked at Evelyn without any fear left in his eyes.
Toby: Goodbye, Grandma.
Evelyn looked at the little boy for a brief moment, her lips trembling slightly, but her pride kept her from saying a word in response.
Richard: Come on, Evelyn. Let's go.
Richard took her arm, guiding her through the front doors and out onto the wide stone porch. The heavy double oak doors swung closed behind them with a firm, solid thud, locking automatically with a sharp click.
The house went completely quiet, filled only with the warm sunlight streaming through the dining room windows.
Claire let out a long, deep breath, feeling the heavy weight that had rested on her shoulders for months finally lift away.
Toby: Mommy? Is it quiet now?
Claire: Yes, Toby. It's very quiet now.
Claire knelt down and opened her arms. Toby ran forward, wrapping his small arms around her neck as she pulled him close.
Claire: You never have to worry about anyone telling you that you don't belong here again. This is our home now.
Toby: Can we make hot food now? Like real lunch?
Claire laughed, tears of relief finally spilling over her cheeks as she kissed her son's forehead.
Claire: Yes, baby. We can make whatever you want.
