The high-key sunlight flooded through the massive windows of the dining room, illuminating the white walls and the polished oak table. What was supposed to be a calm Sunday lunch had turned into an absolute nightmare.
Claire: THIS HOUSE BELONGS TO US!
Claire stood her ground, her voice echoing off the high ceilings as she glared across the table at her mother-in-law, Evelyn.
Evelyn: Don't you dare raise your voice in my home, Claire. You have nothing here.
Beside Claire, her six-year-old son, Toby, sat trembling in his wooden chair. He clutched a small ceramic plate containing a single cold potato, tears running silently down his face.
Toby: Mommy... Grandma said I don't belong here...
Claire: Hush, Toby. Mommy is right here. You don't need to listen to her.
Evelyn: He belongs in a shelter, just like you before my son brought you into this family. You think because David passed away that you get to stay in this mansion?
Evelyn stepped forward, her navy dress rustling as her eyes burned with pure malice. Before Claire could even draw a breath to respond, Evelyn pulled her arm back and delivered a sharp, heavy slap right across Claire's cheek.
Claire reeled back, clutching her stinging face as shock froze her in place. Toby let out a terrified scream, dropping his fork onto the table with a clatter.
Evelyn: YOU GET LOST!
Claire stared at the older woman, her eyes wide with shock and humiliation as tears welled up along her lashes.
Evelyn: GET OUT OF MY HOUSE THIS INSTANT!
Evelyn pointed a firm, sharp finger directly toward the grand front exit door, glaring down at Claire and Toby like they were trash on her expensive rug. But Claire didn't turn around to run. She wiped her cheek, reached into her purse, and pulled out an official leather deed book, throwing it down right next to Evelyn's plate.
