A New Beginning

She Screamed At Him In His Penthouse Until She Found The Hidden Medical Record banner

Six months later, the morning sun poured through the high windows of the Manhattan surrogate court building.

Veronica sat at the wooden plaintiff table, wearing a crisp black blazer, holding a pen over a thick stack of legal custody papers.

Beside her sat her elder brother, David, clean-shaven and dressed in a simple, neat dark suit.

Judge: In the matter of the estate of Claire Vance and the guardianship of Toby Vance, the court is ready to issue its final ruling.

Veronica: We are ready, Your Honor.

Judge: Following the conviction of Julian Vance on federal fraud and forgery charges, all corporate stock shares belonging to the late Claire Vance have been successfully restored to her estate trust.

The judge signed the official document with a heavy stroke of his fountain pen, stamping it with the state seal.

Judge: Full legal and physical custody of Toby Vance is hereby granted to Veronica Reed, with co-guardianship privileges awarded to David Reed.

David let out a long breath, burying his face in his hands as quiet sobs of relief shook his shoulders.

David: Thank you, Your Honor... Thank you so much.

Judge: Ms. Reed, you have conducted yourself with incredible courage and integrity throughout this entire ordeal. The court wishes you and your family peace.

Veronica: Thank you, Your Honor. We just want to give Toby a normal, happy life away from corporate boardrooms.

The judge struck his wooden gavel against the sound block, the loud thud echoing through the high-ceilinged room.

Veronica stood up, hugging her brother tightly before gathering her legal briefcase from the table.

They walked out through the double wooden doors into the sunlit foyer, where Martha was sitting on a marble bench with four-year-old Toby, who was busy coloring in a picture book.

Toby: Auntie Veronica! Look! I painted the sky blue like you showed me!

Veronica knelt down, kissing the top of his soft head as he held up the bright drawing.

Veronica: It's beautiful, Toby. Just like a brand new day.

Martha: Is everything officially finished, Ms. Reed?

Veronica: Everything is signed, Martha. We are heading up to the family home in New England this afternoon.

Martha: I'm so glad. That little boy deserves green grass and fresh air, not marble floors and corporate secrets.

Veronica: He's going to have the best life possible, Martha. With people who actually love him for who he is.

Veronica took Toby’s small hand in hers as they walked together down the grand stone steps of the courthouse into the warm city breeze.

The dark shadows of the Sterling estate, the fake passports, and the greedy lies were finally behind them, replaced by the quiet, honest promise of a real family love that no amount of money could ever buy.
