The Arraignment at the Gate

Returning Home She Found Her Elderly Parents Living On The Sidewalk banner

A siren chimed softly in the distance, getting louder as two marked police cruisers turned onto the quiet suburban street.

Russell: Marin, don't do this! If I get arrested, my reputation in the financial district will be destroyed!

Marin: Your reputation was destroyed the second you stole from my family, Russell.

Russell: I can pay back the money! I'll sign a confession! Just tell the officers it was a domestic misunderstanding!

Lead Attorney: Mr. Vance, anything you say right now is being recorded by our legal team's body cameras. I strongly advise you to remain silent.

The police cars pulled up directly behind the SUVs. Two uniformed officers stepped out, walking briskly up the driveway with handcuffs drawn.

Officer Davis: Russell Vance?

Russell: Officer, thank goodness! My ex-wife is trying to illegally evict me from my own house!

Officer Davis: We have a felony warrant for your arrest, Mr. Vance. Step down off the porch and put your hands behind your back.

Russell: Felony warrant?! For what?!

Officer Davis: Grand larceny, forgery of official state documents, and elder financial exploitation.

Tiffany: I told you! I had nothing to do with this, officers! He lied to me!

Officer Davis: Ma'am, step to the side with Deputy Miller. We'll take your statement in a moment.

The second officer stepped behind Russell, grabbing his wrists and snapping the cold metal handcuffs into place.

Russell: Ow! You're hurting my wrists! Marin, tell them to stop!

Marin: You didn't care about anyone's pain when my father begged you for his heart medication, did you?

Russell: I forgot to give him the bottle! It was an accident!

Marin: You threw his heart medication in the lawn sprinkler, Russell. My mother had to search through the wet grass to find it.

Officer Davis: Let's go, Mr. Vance. You can explain your side to the judge at the arraignment tomorrow morning.

Russell: Marin! Call your lawyers off! I'll give you everything back!

Marin: You don't have anything to give back, Russell. Everything you ever possessed came from my family's generosity.

The officers guided Russell down the stone steps, his silk robe dragging in the dirt as they shoved him into the back seat of the cruiser.

Tiffany stood near the driveway, sobbing loudly as the deputy took down her personal details on a notepad.

Tiffany: Can I at least call an Uber? I don't have any money on me!

Deputy Miller: Your credit cards are flagged under the fraud investigation, ma'am. You'll have to walk to the main road.

Tiffany: Walk?! In three-inch heels?!

Marin: Take off your shoes and start walking, Tiffany. The bus stop is three blocks away.

Marin turned away from the driveway, walking inside her home to ensure the security team secured every room.

The house was quiet, the marble floors reflecting the warm afternoon light streaming through the high windows.

Lead Attorney: Miss Sterling, our team has cleared the second floor. All stolen jewelry and financial records have been recovered.

Marin: Thank you, Mr. Vance. Send a limousine to the diner on Fourth Street immediately. Bring my parents and my nephew home.

Lead Attorney: Right away, ma'am.
