Three months later, the sun shone brightly over the lush green gardens of the Miller Estate. The marble foyer was filled with sweet-smelling white roses, and soft classical music played through the house speakers.
Claire stood near the large glass doors, wearing a stunning yellow summer dress, holding a glass of iced lemonade.
Mr. Harrison walked out onto the patio, holding a final stack of legal documents.
Lawyer: Good afternoon, Claire. I have the final judgment papers from the court.
Claire: Is it completely over?
Lawyer: Yes. The judge granted the full divorce decree this morning. You are legally single, and all financial assets have been fully restored to your estate.
Claire: And Daniel?
Lawyer: He pled guilty to wire fraud and grand larceny to avoid a maximum sentence. He was sentenced to five years in federal prison this morning.
Claire: What about Amanda?
Lawyer: Three years probation, plus full restitution. She will never work in corporate marketing again.
Claire took a slow sip of her lemonade, looking out over the beautiful gardens her father had planted years ago.
Claire: And Evelyn?
Lawyer: She moved to Florida to live with her sister. Last I heard, she's working as a receptionist at a local bowling alley to pay off her remaining credit card debts.
Claire: It's strange, Mr. Harrison. Three months ago, I thought my life was over when I was sitting on that marble floor.
Lawyer: You were too kind to them, Claire. People like Daniel mistake kindness for weakness.
Claire: They will never make that mistake with me again.
Sarah walked onto the patio carrying a tray of fresh appetizers and a bottle of champagne.
Sarah: Congratulations, Claire! The board just voted to approve your new expansion project in Chicago!
Claire: That's wonderful news, Sarah! Pour us three glasses of champagne.
Sarah poured the sparkling wine into three crystal flutes, handing one to Claire and one to Mr. Harrison.
Sarah: To Claire Miller—the true owner of her life and her future!
Lawyer: To freedom and justice.
Claire clinked her glass against theirs, a genuine, radiant smile lighting up her face.
She had lost her marriage, but she had saved herself, her family's legacy, and her self-respect.
And as she looked out toward the warm, bright horizon, Claire knew that her true life was only just beginning.
