Taking Back The House

He Fire His Waitress Until Her Daughter Ran Screaming Into Her Arms banner

Detective Reed: Miss Sterling, we need you to come to the precinct to sign the formal custody confirmation papers.

Maya: I'll be right behind you, Detective. Just give me five minutes with my daughter.

Detective Reed: Take all the time you need. The house is officially under court protective status now.

The detective walked out toward his car, leaving Maya and Chloe standing in the vast, bright hall surrounded by the quiet house staff.

The head housekeeper, an older woman in a black uniform, stepped forward with tears in her eyes.

Housekeeper: Miss Maya... we had no idea. Carter told us you abandoned the baby at the clinic four years ago.

Maya: I know what he told everyone, Mrs. Gable. He paid off the clinic staff to forge the abandonment papers.

Housekeeper: Every night that poor little girl would sit by the window asking when her mommy was coming home. He would lock her in the nursery whenever visitors came over.

Maya felt a sharp wave of anger wash over her chest, but she kept her voice soft for Chloe's sake.

Maya: That nightmare is over now, Mrs. Gable. Pack Chloe's clothes and her favorite toys.

Chloe: Mommy, can we take Mr. Bear? He lives under my bed!

Maya: We are taking Mr. Bear, and every single thing that belongs to you, baby.

Housekeeper: What about the mansion, Miss Maya? Are you going to sell it?

Maya: My father built this house for his family, not for corporate crooks. We are keeping it, but first, I'm changing every lock in this building.

Maya walked toward the wide marble staircase, holding Chloe tightly in her arms. The silver catering tray lay discarded on the floor behind them, forgotten forever.

She carried Chloe up to the second floor, stepping into the nursery room. It was filled with expensive white furniture, but felt cold and lonely, like a gilded cage.

Chloe: Look, Mommy! I drew a picture of you on the paper!

Chloe pointed to a small wooden desk where a crayon drawing of two girls holding hands lay under a desk lamp.

Maya: You drew this for me?

Chloe: The maid said if I wished really hard, you would find me. And you did!

Maya squeezed her eyes shut as tears slipped down her cheeks, pressing a warm kiss against Chloe's forehead.

Maya: I will always find you, Chloe. No matter where you are, no matter what happens, nobody will ever separate us again.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text message from her head attorney, Sarah Vance.

Sarah Vance: The judge just signed the full sole custody order. Carter's bail was officially denied. You win, Maya.

Maya looked down at the glowing screen, letting out a long, peaceful breath that she felt like she had been holding for four long years.

Maya: Come on, Chloe. Let's go home.
