Evelyn: David, let me explain! It's not what you think!
David: You have ten seconds before I call my head of corporate security.
Evelyn: I was just trying to protect our family's assets!
David: Our family's assets? This trust fund was set up by Sarah before she died!
Evelyn: Sarah has been gone for three years! That money is sitting in a restricted trust doing nothing!
David: It is sitting in a trust for Lily until she turns twenty-one!
Evelyn: We are building a life together! We need liquidity for the new real estate holdings in Florida!
David: You tried to declare my daughter mentally unfit so you could become her legal guardian?!
Lily: Daddy... am I sick? Is that why she said I have to go to a boarding school?
David: Boarding school? She told you that?
Lily: She said after the wedding, she was sending me far away to Switzerland so I wouldn't ruin your new life.
David stood up slowly, holding Lily close in his left arm while holding the court papers in his right hand.
David: You told my daughter she was being sent away to Switzerland?
Evelyn: It's a prestigious academy! Children of high-society families go there all the time!
David: She is seven years old, Evelyn!
Evelyn: She needs proper structure! She's clinging to you like a shadow, David! You can't even focus on our marriage!
David: I married you six months ago because I believed you cared about her!
Evelyn: I do care! I care enough to give her a world-class education away from this depressing house!
David: You care about the twelve million dollars sitting in Sarah's legacy fund!
Evelyn: That money belongs to the Vance family estate!
David: No, it belongs to Lily Vance! And her mother made sure no stepmother could ever touch a dime of it!
Lily: Daddy, my face still hurts...
David: I know, sweetie. We're going to put some ice on it right now.
David turned his head toward the hallway where the two housemaids were watching in silence.
David: Mary! Bring a cold ice pack to the study immediately!
Mary: Yes, Mr. Vance! Right away, sir!
Evelyn: Mary, stay right where you are! I am the mistress of this estate!
Mary: I take my orders from Mr. Vance, ma'am.
Mary turned and ran toward the kitchen, her white apron fluttering behind her.
Evelyn's face turned beet red with rage as she glared at the maid's retreating back.
Evelyn: Unbelievable! The servants in this house have zero respect for me!
David: Respect is earned, Evelyn. You don't earn it by striking a child and trying to steal her inheritance.
Evelyn: I didn't steal anything! The papers were never filed!
David: They were stamped by a notary public yesterday afternoon!
David pointed to the red wax emblem on the bottom corner of the third page.
David: You were going to submit this to the county probate court on Monday morning while I was in Chicago.
Evelyn: I was doing what was necessary for our financial growth!
David: You were committing fraud and child abuse!
Lily: Daddy... look under the toy box on the floor...
David: What is it, Lily?
Lily: There's another small black book she hid in my yellow bag...
