The Terrifying Call From The Clinic

A Seven Year Old Boy Saved His Dying Sister In The ICU banner

David: Dr. Vance, please tell me there is still a chance!

Dr. Vance: Mr. Miller, your wife's pregnancy had severe complications during the emergency C-section.

Sarah: Where is my baby? Why aren't you letting me hold her?!

Dr. Vance: She was born with severe respiratory distress, Mrs. Miller. Her lungs aren't expanding properly.

Sarah: Oh God, no! Please save her!

David: We paid for the top specialist team in the entire state! You promised us she would be safe!

Dr. Vance: We have her on full life support in the neonatal intensive care unit right now, but her heart rate is dangerously low.

Toby: Mommy, why are you crying so hard?

Sarah: Toby, honey... sit down on the waiting room couch for a minute.

Toby: Is my baby sister awake yet? Can I give her the teddy bear I brought?

David: Not right now, Toby. The doctors are working on her.

Toby: But I promised her I would hold her hand when she was born!

Dr. Vance: Mr. and Mrs. Miller, I need to be completely honest with you both. Her blood pressure is dropping rapidly.

Sarah: David, do something! Call another specialist! Call anyone!

David: I'll pay whatever it takes! We have a trust fund set up for her care, take everything!

Dr. Vance: This isn't a matter of money, David. Her brain isn't receiving enough oxygen.

Sarah: No, no, no! This can't be happening to us again!

Toby: Mommy, what does oxygen mean?

David: Toby, please! Go sit with the nurse at the front desk!

Toby: I don't want to sit with the nurse! I want to see Lily!

A loud chime echoed through the hospital ceiling speakers, followed by a frantic voice over the intercom.

Intercom: Code Blue, Neonatal ICU, Room 402. All available trauma staff report immediately.

Sarah: That's her room! That's Lily's room!

Sarah collapsed to her knees on the waiting room carpet, clutching her chest as her husband tried to hold her up.

Dr. Vance: Stay here! I need to get back inside!

David: We are coming with you!

Dr. Vance: You cannot cross the glass wall during a cardiac arrest protocol!

Dr. Vance turned around and ran down the hallway, leaving the parents stranded near the observation window.

Toby looked at his parents' pale faces, then down at the small brown teddy bear in his hands.

He didn't ask for permission, nor did he wait for the adults to tell him what to do.

He turned his body toward the long hallway and took off running toward Room 402 as fast as his small legs could carry him.
