The next morning, the bright sun streamed through the kitchen windows of Clara's cozy suburban home.
Maya sat at the table in her pajamas, eating a bowl of colorful cereal while watching cartoons on the small counter television.
Clara: How's the knee feeling today, little hero?
Maya: It doesn't hurt anymore! The cartoon bandage helped a lot.
Clara: Good. Because we have a big day ahead of us.
Maya: Are we going to the park?
Clara: After I drop off some paperwork at the office, yes.
The home phone rang on the wall, and Clara answered it while pouring herself a cup of fresh coffee.
Clara: Clara speaking.
Director: Clara, excellent work last night. The news is everywhere. The board of directors at Vance Pharmaceuticals just dissolved his position.
Clara: Good. Did the judge set bail?
Director: Denied. He's being held without bond until the grand jury hearing next month.
Clara: What about the insurance company?
Director: They're filing a civil suit to recover the twelve million dollars today. You nailed him completely.
Clara: He made the mistake of touching my daughter. That was his first and last error.
Director: Take the rest of the week off, Clara. You've earned it.
Clara: Thanks, Director. I plan on spending it with Maya.
Clara hung up the receiver, walking over to the table and kissing Maya on the top of her head.
Maya: Was that your boss, Mommy?
Clara: Yep. He said I get to stay home with you for a whole week.
Maya: Yay! Can we build a fort in the living room?!
Clara: Absolute priority task, Agent Maya.
Maya giggled, hugging her mother tightly around the waist.
Maya: I want to be a badge agent just like you when I grow up.
Clara: You're already braver than most grown-ups I know, sweetie.
Clara looked out the window at the peaceful morning, knowing that truth and justice had won the day.
No matter how powerful or wealthy corrupt people thought they were, they could never stand against a mother protecting her child.
