The Unanswered Call

The Trapped Mother and the Secret Yacht Mystery banner

Damien: Captain, did you hear me? Seal the bridge!

Captain: Mr. Vance, the Coast Guard line is down. The radio satellite seems to be disconnected.

Damien: Disconnected? How is that possible?

Captain: Someone pulled the main fuse block from the upper relay panel, sir.

Damien lowered his radio, his jaw tight as he turned back to his mother on the cold steel floor.

Damien: Mom, can you walk? Take my hand.

Eleanor: My legs are so weak, Damien. I don't know what they put in my drink.

Damien: Who gave you that cup?

Eleanor: Evelyn brought it to my cabin before lunch. She said it was herbal tea for my motion sickness.

Damien knelt down, taking the plastic cup from her fingers and smelling the faint, bitter liquid inside.

Damien: This isn't tea. This smells like a heavy sedative.

Eleanor: She told me your father's will was going to be read tomorrow in Miami.

Damien: My father's will? Why would she bring up the trust fund out at sea?

Eleanor: She wanted me to sign a paper waiver... she said if I signed it, I could go back to the stateroom.

Damien: What kind of waiver?

Eleanor: A paper surrendering my shares in the family estate to her personal company.

Damien helped Eleanor stand up, supporting her weight as she leaned heavily against his shoulder.

Damien: We're going back upstairs right now.

Eleanor: Be careful, Damien. Julian and the others are in on it with her.

Damien: Julian is my father's corporate lawyer! He's supposed to represent the whole family!

Eleanor: Evelyn promised him ten percent of the offshore account if he helped her clear the trust.

Damien guided his mother through the narrow metal doorway, his hands trembling with anger.

Damien: They think because we are ten miles off the coast, they control everything.

Eleanor: What are you going to do?

Damien: I'm going to make sure every single one of them goes to prison for kidnapping and fraud.

They reached the foot of the stairs leading up to the main deck.

Damien: Hold onto the railing, Mom. I'm going to push the hatch open.

He reached for the heavy wheel latch, but as he turned it, a sharp metallic click echoed through the shaft.

Damien: The door... it's locked from the outside again!

Julian: You shouldn't have gone down there, Damien!

Julian's voice boomed down through the steel ventilation shaft from the upper corridor.

Damien: Julian! Open this hatch right now!

Julian: Your father's estate is worth eighty million dollars, Damien. You really thought we'd let your mother keep half?

Damien: She was his wife for thirty years! Evelyn was only married to him for two!

Julian: Evelyn has the signed paperwork. Well, she will in about twenty minutes.

Damien: You won't get away with this! The crew knows we are down here!

Julian: The crew works for the charter company Evelyn hired. They don't care who pays them as long as the check clears.

Damien slammed his fist against the steel hatch, the heavy echo reverberating through the dark engine bay.
