The Secret Pill Bottles In The Bedroom

The cold water splashed across the heavy woolen blankets, soaking into the white bedsheets where the fragile old woman lay motionless in the dimly lit bedroom.

Karina: Wake up! You need to drink this right now!

Alejandro: Karina, what are you doing?!

Alejandro stopped dead in the doorway, his leather briefcase slipping from his hand and crashing against the hardwood floor.

Karina: Alejandro! She—she had an episode!

Karina clutched the heavy glass pitcher tightly against her chest, her hands shaking as she backed away from the bedside table.

Alejandro: An episode? You're pouring freezing water all over my mother's bed!

Karina: I was trying to wake her up! She collapsed while I was getting her afternoon tea!

Alejandro: Get away from her right now!

Alejandro rushed across the room, pulling back the wet blanket to see dozens of spilled brown pill bottles scattered across the mattress.

Karina: I didn't open those! She knocked the duffel bag off the table herself!

Elena: Mijo... help...

Elena reached out a frail, trembling hand, her voice barely a whisper through her wet, gasping lips.

Alejandro: Mom! Don't try to talk. I've got you.

Elena: She... she forced them... down my throat...

Karina: She's confused, Alejandro! The doctor told us her memory is fading!

Alejandro: Shut your mouth, Karina!

Alejandro slowly turned his head toward the private home nurse, his jaw clenching as blood rushed to his face in pure, burning fury.

Karina: I swear on my life, I was only trying to help her!

Alejandro: You aren't helping anyone anymore.

Alejandro pulled his smartphone out of his dark jacket pocket, aiming the camera lens straight at Karina's trembling, pale face as he pressed the red recording button.

Karina: Put that phone away! You can't record me in a private house!

Alejandro: Say every word again, Karina. Tell the police exactly why you had forty bottles of illegal sedatives hidden in her bedroom wardrobe.
