Servants No More

The Secret Hidden In The Gold Basin banner

Back at the Vance estate, the afternoon sun illuminated the grand foyer. Evelyn stood near the marble staircase, wearing her gold silk gown, as two staff members carefully wiped down the floor around the gold basin.

Evelyn: Make sure you get all the water marks off the marble! I won't have this place looking like a barn when the guests arrive!

Housekeeper: Yes, Mrs. Vance. We're almost finished.

The front doors swung open, and Marcus Brody walked inside, accompanied by two uniformed sheriff's deputies and four private security officers.

Evelyn: What is the meaning of this?! Who gave you permission to walk into my home?!

Marcus: This isn't your home, Evelyn. I am here on behalf of Daniel Vance, the sole legal owner of this estate.

Evelyn: That is nonsense! My husband's will gave me full control of this house!

Marcus: Paragraph four, section B of your late husband's trust agreement states otherwise. The birth of Daniel's daughter at six o'clock this morning officially transferred all property rights directly to Daniel.

Evelyn's face turned pale, her hand clutching the banister as her eyes widened in shock.

Evelyn: A girl...? She had a girl?

Marcus: A healthy baby girl. And here is your formal twenty-four-hour eviction notice signed by the county judge.

Marcus extended a white envelope toward her, but Evelyn refused to touch it, her face twisting into a mask of rage.

Evelyn: I will not touch that garbage! I am the head of this family!

Deputy 1: Ma'am, if you refuse to take the papers, we will post them on the front door. You have until twelve o'clock tomorrow to remove your personal effects.

Evelyn: You can't throw me out! I built this life! Daniel wouldn't do this to his own mother!

Marcus: Daniel didn't just order the eviction, Evelyn. He also signed these criminal charges for domestic abuse and reckless endangerment.

Evelyn: Abuse?! I was teaching that ungrateful girl how to manage a high-society household!

Marcus: Forcing a nine-month pregnant woman to kneel on marble for four hours until her placenta detached is called felony endangerment, ma'am.

The housekeepers stopped scrubbing, exchanging shocked looks as they slowly stood up from the floor and stepped away from Evelyn.

Evelyn: What are you staring at?! Get back to work!

Housekeeper: No, Mrs. Vance. We take our orders from Daniel now. And he told us to stop working for you.

Evelyn: You ungrateful servants! I pay your salaries!

Marcus: Actually, Daniel pays their salaries. And your corporate credit cards were officially canceled ten minutes ago.

Evelyn pulled her gold leather purse open, pulling out her primary black card with shaking fingers.

Evelyn: My card... canceled?!

Marcus: The corporate board held an emergency meeting an hour ago. Given the pending criminal charges against you, they voted unanimously to remove you from the executive committee.

Evelyn stumbled backward, dropping her purse onto the marble floor as the gold credit cards scattered across the ground—right beside the gold basin she had forced me to clean.
