The grand chandelier hummed above the long oak table in the mansion's opulent dining room.
Evelyn: Sit down right now, both of you!
David: She hasn't eaten in two days, Mother.
Evelyn: I do not care! This is my house, and my birthday dinner comes first!
Sarah: David, please... it's okay. I can sit up for a little while.
Sarah's arms trembled as she held her three-month-old daughter, Lily, close to her chest. Her face was pale, dried sweat sticking her dark hair to her forehead.
David: No, it is not okay! She has a fever of 103 degrees, Mother!
Evelyn: She is dramatic! Just like her mother was!
David: Take that back right now.
Evelyn: I am in charge of this house! I pay the mortgage, I pay the servants, and I say who sits at this table!
David: You forced her to cook this six-course meal while she was sick!
Evelyn: She is my daughter-in-law! It is her duty to serve this family!
David looked at his mother's cold, sneering eyes, then back at his trembling wife. Something inside him snapped like a dry twig.
David: If she doesn't get to rest, nobody eats!
With a roar of pure rage, David grabbed the edge of the twelve-foot mahogany dining table and lifted with all his strength.
The entire table flipped over with a deafening crash. Crystal glasses shattered against the hardwood floor. The three-tiered birthday cake, silver platters of roasted meat, and porcelain bowls flew through the air, spraying gravy and icing across the velvet drapes.
The invited guests let out a collective gasp, scrambling backward in absolute horror.
Evelyn: You insane fool! Look what you did to my crystal!
David lunged forward across the ruined food, grabbing the lapel of Evelyn's silk blouse and shoving her back. The sharp edge of a broken porcelain plate caught her face, leaving a red slash across her cheek.
Evelyn: How dare you!
Evelyn lost her balance on the slippery floor, crashing hard onto the hardwood amidst the overturned chairs and shattered glass.
She lay on her back, clutching her bleeding cheek, her eyes wide with breathless, terrified shock.
David turned away from her completely. He walked over to Sarah, wrapping his strong arms around her and their weeping infant, standing like an iron shield between his family and the fallen matriarch.
David: You will never disrespect my wife ever again.
Evelyn sputtered, trying to push herself up, but the dark look in her son's eyes made her freeze, setting off a chain of events that would tear the wealthy Vance family apart at the seams.
