Six months later, the sun shone brightly through the high windows of the county courthouse. The hallway was filled with reporters, camera flashes, and legal teams carrying thick leather folders.
Alice sat on a velvet bench in the hallway, wearing an elegant cream-colored maternity dress. Her belly was full and round, just weeks away from her delivery date. Julian sat beside her, holding a cup of warm tea for her and holding her hand tightly in his lap.
Julian: How are you feeling, sweetheart? Is the baby kicking?
Alice: He's very active today. I think he knows justice is finally being served.
The heavy doors of Courtroom 4 opened, and Julian's chief attorney, Marcus, walked out with a faint smile on his face.
Julian: What's the verdict, Marcus?
Marcus: The judge just finalized the settlement and criminal charges, Mr. Sterling. It's a complete victory.
Alice: What happened to Victoria and her family?
Marcus: Victoria's father was convicted of corporate fraud and tax evasion. He's sentenced to eight years in federal prison. Their family assets have been completely seized to pay back the stolen charity funds.
Alice: And Victoria?
Marcus: She received two years of probation and three hundred hours of mandatory community service for her role in the harassment and confinement charges. Her high-society social status is completely ruined. She's currently working at a local dry cleaner to pay off her personal credit debts.
Alice let out a long breath, resting her head on Julian's shoulder.
Alice: I don't feel happy about their downfall... but I'm glad they can't hurt anyone else.
Julian: You have a heart that's far too kind, Alice. That's why I fell in love with you in the first place.
Alice: What about your father, Julian?
Julian: My father signed over all remaining family shares to a trust fund created specifically for our son. He's retired to a small property in Florida, banned from ever holding a position on the corporate board again.
Marcus: Also, Mrs. Sterling, the deed for the main mansion in Boston has been officially transferred into your name alone. It's no longer part of the Sterling corporate trust.
Alice: My name? Julian, that mansion is worth forty million dollars!
Julian: It's your house now, Alice. You can turn it into whatever you want.
Alice: Then I want to turn it into a shelter for expectant mothers who have nowhere else to go. No woman should ever feel helpless or trapped like I did.
Julian looked at his wife, his eyes filled with immense pride and deep affection. He leaned down and kissed her softly on the forehead.
Julian: That is the most beautiful idea I've ever heard. We'll start renovations next week.
