Three months later, the morning sun shone brightly through the foyer windows. The marble floors were clean, and the grand staircase looked quiet and peaceful.
Lily was sitting on the bottom step, tying her shoes with a bright pink ribbon.
Lily: Daddy! Look! I tied them all by myself!
Mark: Wow, double knot and everything! You're getting so big, Lily.
Eleanor walked out from the dining room holding a tray of warm breakfast muffins.
Eleanor: The legal team called this morning, Mark. The judge finalized Julian's plea deal.
Mark: How long is he serving?
Eleanor: Eight years for fraud, grand theft, and conspiracy. Clara got three years since she cooperated with the state prosecutor.
Mark: That's fair. They made their choices, and now they have to live with them.
Eleanor: The court also ordered Julian to surrender his remaining shares in the Sterling Corporation. Everything has been officially placed under Lily's trust fund, completely locked until she turns twenty-five.
Mark: Good. Now nobody can ever touch her future again.
Lily stood up, slinging her floral backpack over her shoulders and smiling up at both of us.
Lily: Is the new housekeeper coming today, Mommy?
Eleanor: Yes, sweetie. Her name is Mrs. Gable. She used to work for your grandmother, and she's very kind.
Lily: Does she know how to bake chocolate chip cookies?
Eleanor: She makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the whole state!
Lily giggled, holding onto my hand as we walked toward the front door together.
The house felt different now. The dark shadow of greed and betrayal that had lingered over our family for months was finally gone, replaced by light, trust, and complete security.
I looked down at my daughter as she skipped happily toward the school bus waiting at the end of the driveway, knowing that no matter what happened, I would always be there to protect her from any harm.
