The Paperwork That Saved Him

Marcus glared at Evelyn as she approached the gate. His jaw was clenched tightly.

Marcus: Evelyn! What lie did you tell these officers?!

Evelyn: I didn't tell them a lie, Marcus. I showed them the truth.

Leo broke free from the guard's light grip and ran straight into Evelyn's arms.

Leo: Mommy! Mommy, you came back!

Evelyn: I'm here, baby. I told you to wait for me. Mommy never leaves you.

Evelyn lifted Leo into her arms, kissing his forehead while holding him tight.

Marcus: Officer, arrest this woman! She doesn't have custody! The court in New York granted me full guardianship last week!

The man standing beside Evelyn stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase.

Attorney Vance: My name is Robert Vance, lead counsel for Evelyn Vance. And the document you're referring to, Mr. Sterling, was revoked six hours ago by the state supreme court.

Marcus stared at the attorney in total disbelief.

Marcus: Revoked?! That's a lie! My lawyers paid—I mean, filed the final motions on Monday!

Attorney Vance: You almost said 'paid,' Marcus. Which is very appropriate, considering you bribed Judge Clarence to sign those custody papers without a hearing.

The crowd surrounding the gate began murmuring. Several people held up their phones to record video.

Marcus: That is slander! You have no proof of any bribery!

Evelyn: We have the bank transfer receipts, Marcus.

Marcus: What bank receipts?!

Evelyn: The fifty thousand dollars you wired from your offshore account in the Caymans directly to Judge Clarence's wife's shell company last Thursday night.

Marcus froze. Sweat began to bead along his forehead.

Marcus: How... how did you get those records?

Evelyn: Did you really think I was sitting quietly at home for the past three years while you used your family's money to destroy my life?

Marcus: You're a high school art teacher! You don't have the money to hire private investigators!

Evelyn: I didn't hire them, Marcus. The Federal Bureau of Investigation did.

Two men in dark suits stepped out from behind the security line, holding up metal badges.

FBI Agent Miller: Marcus Sterling? You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, judicial bribery, and international parental abduction.

Marcus: Wait! Let me call my attorney! Call my father! My father is the CEO of Sterling Investments!

FBI Agent Miller: Your father was arrested at his desk twenty minutes ago, Mr. Sterling. Turn around.
