Too Late to Understand

The Billionaire's Daughter in the Gold Dress banner

Arthur: Please, Emma. We can work this out.

Emma: There is nothing to work out.

Arthur: I am Chloe's father. We are a family.

Emma: Don't you dare use that word. You lost the right to a family when you walked away.

Arthur: I was young and stupid! I made a mistake.

Emma: A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. You abandoned a pregnant woman and stole her inheritance.

Arthur: I will give it all back to you. The mansion, the cars, the CEO title.

Emma: I am already taking it back. The foreclosure notices are being printed right now.

Arthur: What am I supposed to do? I have nowhere to go.

Emma: That is not my problem.

The sounds of heavy boots echoed through the front doors of the mansion. Three federal agents walked into the banquet hall.

Agent: Arthur Vance? You are under arrest for corporate fraud and embezzlement.

Arthur: No! You can't do this! I am a billionaire!

Agent: Not anymore, sir. Put your hands behind your back.

Arthur: Emma, please! Tell them to stop. Tell them we made a deal!

Emma stood perfectly still. Tears swelled in her eyes, born from fifteen years of deep hurt and resentment.

Emma: You always were too late to understand.

Arthur: Too late? What do you mean?

Emma: If you had just shown a little kindness tonight... if you had just apologized to the girl you bumped into...

Arthur: It was just a slap!

Emma: It was the final nail in your coffin. I was going to offer you a settlement today.

Arthur: You were?

Emma: Yes. I was going to let you keep a percentage of the company. Because I thought, deep down, you might be a decent man.

Arthur: I am! I am a decent man!

Emma: No, Arthur. You hit a child for standing in your way. You are exactly the monster I remember.

The agents clamped the steel handcuffs over Arthur's wrists. He began to sob as they dragged him toward the door.

Arthur: Chloe! Chloe, tell your mother to stop!

Chloe stood up slowly, her gold dress shimmering under the chandeliers. She looked at the man being hauled away.

Chloe: I don't know you, mister. And I am glad I never will.

Emma wrapped her arm tightly around her daughter's shoulders. They watched the heavy mansion doors close behind him forever.
