The crystal chandeliers hung high above the marble floor of the grand estate ballroom. Guests in expensive suits and designer dresses held glasses of champagne, laughing softly under the warm lighting. Mara stood near the edge of the hall, resting a hand on her round belly. She was seven months pregnant and exhausted, but her husband had insisted she attend the family gala.
Julian: Move out of the way, Mara.
Mara: Julian, please. I just need to sit down for a minute.
Julian: I said move! You're standing right where the photographer needs to take photos!
Julian grabbed Mara forcefully by her arm, pushing her hard toward the long gift table loaded with wrapped boxes and tall floral arrangements.
Julian: SHE'S CARRYING THE REAL HEIR!
Julian shouted the words for the entire room to hear, pointing at his mistress, Chloe, who stood nearby cradling her own smaller pregnant bump. Mara lost her balance on the slippery marble, her heels skidding as she crashed heavily into the gift table. Wrapped presents tumbled to the floor, crashing against the tiles as guests gasped in collective shock.
Mara: Ah!
Guest 1: Oh my goodness! Is she okay?
Guest 2: Did he just push his pregnant wife?
Mara landed hard on her knees, clutching her stomach in pain as tears blurred her vision. At the front of the room, sitting comfortably in a high-backed velvet armchair, was Julian's mother, Victoria. She held a glass of white wine, looking down at Mara with cold eyes and a cruel smile, clapping her hands together slowly.
Victoria: STOP BEING DRAMATIC, MARA!
Victoria: You fell because you're clumsy, not because my son touched you.
Mara wiped the hot tears from her face. The pain in her side faded, replaced instantly by a burning, furious rage that surged through her entire body. She pushed herself up off the marble floor, standing tall as the room fell completely silent.
Mara: You think you can treat me like garbage in front of everyone?
Mara stepped forward, her eyes locked on Julian. Before he could react, she raised her hand and delivered a sharp, heavy slap directly across his face.
Julian: Ugh!
Mara: NEVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!
Julian reeled back, gripping his reddened cheek in total shock. But Mara wasn't finished. She turned her enraged glare toward Victoria, taking three fast steps forward before swinging her hand down, landing a stinging slap across the older woman's face that echoed throughout the quiet ballroom.
Victoria: Oh!
Victoria gasped, holding her cheek in utter disbelief as Julian stood frozen beside her. Mara pulled her shoulders back, adjusted her beige dress, and turned on her heel, proudly walking out of the mansion while the entire family watched in stunned silence, realizing the sweet, quiet girl they picked on was gone forever.
