Six months later, the sun was bright over the gardens behind the Sterling estate. Construction workers were finishing up work on a new community park built on the edge of the property.
Sarah stood on the marble terrace wearing a light blue dress, holding a cup of morning coffee. Lily was running across the grass, playing with a small golden retriever puppy.
Arthur: She looks happier every day, doesn't she?
Sarah turned around to see Arthur walking out onto the terrace, holding the morning newspaper.
Sarah: She sleeps through the night now, Arthur. No more nightmares about people yelling at her.
Arthur: That's because she knows she's safe here. With her mother.
Sarah: Did you get news from the prosecutor's office today?
Arthur: Yes. Victoria's trial ended yesterday afternoon. She pled guilty to all counts of wire fraud and grand theft.
Sarah: What was her sentence?
Arthur: Twelve years in federal prison. Without possibility of early parole for the first seven.
Sarah took a slow sip of her coffee, looking out over the quiet gardens.
Sarah: Do you feel any regret, Arthur?
Arthur: None at all. She made her choices when she chose greed over her family. She gets what she deserves.
Mr. Vance: Good morning, everyone.
Robert Vance stepped out onto the terrace, carrying a leather binder.
Sarah: Morning, Robert. Are the final transfer documents ready?
Mr. Vance: Fully processed and stamped by the state court, Sarah. The entire thirty-five million dollars stolen by Victoria has been recovered and deposited back into Lily's trust fund.
Arthur: Excellent work, Vance. And what about the mortgage on the estate?
Mr. Vance: Cancelled by the bank. The court declared the forged documents null and void. The mansion is completely free and clear under Sarah and Lily's names.
Sarah: Thank you for everything you've done for us, Robert. We couldn't have fought this without your help.
Mr. Vance: It was my honor, Sarah. It's not often I get to help good people get justice against corrupt bullies.
Lily: Mommy! Look! Barnaby caught the ball!
Lily came running up the terrace steps, her puppy bounding right behind her, wagging its tail excitedly.
Sarah: Good job, sweetie! Bring Barnaby over here so Grandpa can give him a treat.
Arthur bent down slowly, picking up a small biscuit from a side table and handing it to the puppy.
Arthur: Here you go, little guy. You're part of this family now too.
Lily: Mommy, are we ever going to leave this big house?
Sarah knelt down beside her daughter, smoothing back her hair with a gentle smile.
Sarah: No, baby. This is our home. Nobody will ever tell us we don't belong here ever again.
Lily: Even if bad people come back?
Sarah: Even if bad people come back. Mommy will always protect you.
Arthur: And so will your Grandpa. We stand together now.
Lily smiled brightly, throwing her arms around Sarah's waist as the puppy barked happily beside them.
Sarah looked up at the warm blue sky, feeling a deep sense of peace that she hadn't felt since David's passing.
She had fought for her daughter's dignity, exposed a corrupt legacy, and claimed the home that was rightfully theirs.
