The Shadow In The Kitchen

Her Mother-In-Law Forced Her To Sign Custody Papers Until Her Missing Husband Returned banner

Arthur held Clara firmly against his chest, feeling her fast heartbeat press against his formal uniform jacket.

Clara: Arthur... I thought you were gone forever. The military chaplain came to the door two weeks ago!

Arthur: They made a mistake at the base, sweetheart. I was rescued from the crash site three days ago.

Clara: Your mother told me the army confirmed your body was found. She showed me official letters!

Arthur: She fabricated those letters, Clara. She's been planning this since the day I deployed.

Evelyn stood near the granite kitchen island, holding her red cheek as her eyes flashed with cold hatred.

Evelyn: I did what any mother would do! She was going to drag our family name into bankruptcy court!

Arthur: She is my wife! The mother of my child! You tried to burn her face with a hot iron!

Evelyn: She refused to cooperate! She was going to steal your grandfather's inheritance money!

Arthur: Grandfather left that inheritance directly to my child in his last will and testament!

Clara wiped her wet face, looking up at Arthur with deep confusion and pain.

Clara: What inheritance, Arthur? You told me your family just owned a small hardware store in town.

Arthur: My grandfather owned the entire Miller Manufacturing Corporation, Clara. He set up a ten-million-dollar trust fund for my firstborn child.

Clara: Ten million dollars...? I had no idea about any of this.

Evelyn: Of course you didn't! You're just a low-class waitress from the diner down the road!

Arthur: Shut your mouth, Evelyn! You have no right to speak to her like that!

Evelyn: I am the matriarch of this family! I spent thirty years managing your father's estate!

Arthur: You spent thirty years spending his money while he lay sick in a care home!

Arthur picked up the legal document off the counter, reading the small print at the bottom of the page.

Arthur: Look at this, Clara. She had a notary public pre-sign these custody transfer papers three days ago.

Clara: She told me if I didn't sign, she would have the sheriff throw me out on the street tonight.

Evelyn: The lease on that apartment is in my name! I have every legal right to evict her!

Arthur: I paid the rent on that apartment for six months in advance before I left for my overseas tour!

Evelyn: I pocketed that cash, Arthur! You're a naive fool just like your father was!

Outside the kitchen window, red and blue lights began to flash against the dark glass as police sirens wailed down the quiet street.

Clara: Arthur... the police are here.

Arthur: Good. Because she's not getting away with this for another second.

Evelyn backed toward the back door, her voice turning high-pitched with sudden panic.

Evelyn: Arthur, you can't do this to your own mother! Think of the headlines in the local newspaper!

Arthur: I don't give a damn about the newspaper, Evelyn. You tried to torture my pregnant wife.

The front door chimed as heavy footsteps rushed down the hallway toward the kitchen.

Two uniformed police officers stepped into the room, their hands resting on their utility belts.

Officer Hayes: Captain Miller? We received a distress call regarding an assault and home invasion.

Arthur: Officer, arrest this woman immediately. She threatened my wife with a hot iron and attempted to commit document fraud.

Evelyn: This is a private family dispute! Officers, my son is suffering from severe military PTSD!

Arthur: I am completely fine, Officer Hayes. Take a look at the steam iron on that counter and those legal papers.

Officer Hayes stepped forward, picking up the custody surrender form off the marble table.

Officer Hayes: Mrs. Miller, please step away from the back door and place your hands behind your back.

Evelyn: Don't you touch me! Do you know who my lawyer is?!

Officer Hayes: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

Evelyn screamed as the steel handcuffs snapped around her wrists, her cold eyes glaring at Clara as she was pulled away.

Evelyn: You ruined everything, you little parasite! You'll never see a dime of that trust fund!

Clara: I never wanted your money, Evelyn. I just wanted my husband back.

The heavy kitchen door clicked shut behind the officers, leaving Arthur and Clara standing alone in the quiet house, unaware of the corporate trap waiting for them in town.
