Three months later, the bright morning sun streamed through the high stained-glass windows of the county courthouse.

Mark sat at the defense table wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed to his waist chain.

His face was pale and drawn, his hair messy after spending ninety days in county jail awaiting trial.

Arthur Sterling sat beside him, whispering in a low, urgent tone.

Arthur Sterling: The prosecutor is refusing to remove the felony charge, Mark. You need to take the plea deal.

Mark: Five years?! Sterling, you told me you could get me probation!

Arthur Sterling: That was before they brought in the high-definition store footage and the hospital medical reports!

Mark: Look at her sitting over there! She looks completely fine!

At the prosecutor's table, Clara sat holding a sweet, sleeping baby girl swaddled in a pink blanket.

Her mother sat right beside her, patting her shoulder softly.

Bailiff: All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Evans.

The courtroom grew dead silent as Judge Evans took her seat at the high bench, adjusting her reading glasses.

Judge Evans: State versus Mark Miller. Case number 4092. Are both parties ready for sentencing?

Prosecutor: State is ready, Your Honor.

Arthur Sterling: Defense is ready, Your Honor.

Judge Evans: Before I deliver my sentence, I will allow the victim to make a statement to the court.

Clara stood up carefully, holding her daughter securely against her chest as she stepped up to the podium.

Clara: Thank you, Your Honor.

Judge Evans: Take your time, Mrs. Miller.

Clara turned her eyes toward Mark, her voice steady and filled with absolute strength.

Clara: Three months ago, the man sitting in that orange jumpsuit shoved me to the marble floor because he thought money was more important than human life.

Mark looked down at the wooden table, unable to meet her gaze.

Clara: He left me bleeding and crying on the ground while he tried to run away from his actions.

Prosecutor: Let the record show the defendant refused to assist the victim at the scene.

Clara: But what he didn't realize was that pushing me down didn't make me weak... it made me realize how strong I actually am.

Clara looked down at her baby's tiny face, a gentle smile appearing on her lips.

Clara: My daughter, Lily, was born healthy two weeks ago. She will grow up knowing that her mother stood up against cruelty and won.

Judge Evans: Thank you, Mrs. Miller. You may be seated.
