The bright skylights of the museum gallery cast a harsh glow across the polished white marble floor. Classical statues lined the hall, echoing with the quiet chatter of wealthy donors. Victoria smoothed the silk of her strapless red gown, taking a breath before looking around for her eight-year-old son, Toby.
Victoria: Toby, stay close to me, please.
Toby: I'm right here, Mommy. Look at the big stone lion!
Victoria: It's very nice, sweetie. Just don't touch anything.
A tall man in a beige linen suit stepped directly into Toby's path. Richard, her ex-husband's business partner, scowled down at the small boy in his neat white suit.
Richard: Get out of my way, you brat.
Toby: Excuse me, mister. I was just looking.
Richard: I said move!
Before Victoria could step between them, Richard raised his hand and shoved Toby hard. The boy tumbled backward, his small body hitting the marble floor with a loud thud that echoed off the high ceiling.
The entire hall fell dead silent as several guests gasped in shock.
Toby clutched the back of his head, tears filling his eyes as he cried out in pain.
Toby: Mommy! My head hurts!
Victoria's face contorted into pure rage. Her blood ran ice-cold, all the years of quiet endurance snapping in an instant.
Victoria: You monster!
She lunged forward without hesitation, her hand swinging back before landing a sharp, heavy slap directly across Richard's face. She didn't stop there. Victoria struck him again and again, her open palms landing repeatedly against his cheeks and chest.
Richard: Stop it! Are you insane?! Get off me!
With one final, forceful shove, Victoria pushed him backward. Richard stumbled, clutching his reddened face in absolute shock.
Victoria: DON'T YOU EVER TOUCH MY SON!
Richard straightened his jacket, glaring at her while trying to regain his composure in front of the crowd.
Richard: He tripped over his own feet! You're crazy, Victoria! Security will throw you out of this building!
Victoria reached into the hidden side pocket of her red gown, her fingers closing around a heavy silver object. She pulled out a small metal USB drive and held it up between her fingers, her voice cold and steady.
Victoria: YOU SHOULD HAVE CHECKED THE SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS!
She opened her hand, letting the metal drive drop. It hit the marble with a sharp clink and slid across the floor, stopping right at Richard's polished leather shoes.
Victoria: THAT HAS YOUR OVERSEAS ACCOUNTS AND EMBEZZLEMENT RECORDS!
Richard stared down at the small piece of metal. All the color drained from his face as he dropped to his knees right there on the floor, trembling as Victoria knelt down to gather her crying son into her arms.
But this gallery was only the beginning of Richard's public ruin.
