The fluorescent lights of the modern suburban kitchen hummed softly above the shiny white island.
Two young girls sat huddled on the high wooden barstools, their sparkling sequin party dresses catching the light as tears streamed down their red, blotchy cheeks.
Brooke: Please, Jason... just leave us alone.
Jason: Look at you two. Absolutely pathetic.
Jason leaned against the counter, picking up an apple and tossing it casually from hand to hand with a mean, mocking smile.
Haley: We didn't do anything to you! Why are you being so mean?
Jason: You existing is annoying enough. Smile, trash. She deserved every hit she got tonight.
Their aunt, Sarah, stood near the stove, clutching her bruised arm while crying silently into a paper towel.
Sarah: Jason, stop it. They're just kids. You've done enough damage for one night.
Jason: Shut up, old woman. Nobody asked for your input.
Brooke hugged her little sister tighter, trying to shield Haley's ears from the cruel words pouring out of Jason's mouth.
Brooke: Our dad is going to be home any minute. You better get out of our house.
Jason: Your dad? What is that washed-up loser going to do? He doesn't scare me.
Haley: He's going to make you pay!
Jason: Keep crying, little girl. Nobody in this family can touch me.
The heavy oak back door suddenly slammed open against the wall, rattling the glass frames along the hallway.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a rumpled grey business suit stepped into the kitchen, his tie loosened and his eyes fixed directly on Jason.
Mark: He put hands on her? Step outside right now.
Jason: Oh, look who finally decided to show up.
Mark: I said step outside, Jason.
Jason: Make me, old man.
Mark began slowly, aggressively rolling up his crisp white dress sleeves past his forearms, his jaw locked in pure, unfiltered rage.
Sarah: Mark, no! Don't do something that will land you in trouble!
Mark: Stay back, Sarah. Girls, look away.
Jason: You think rolling up your sleeves makes you tough?
Before Jason could even finish his sentence, Mark charged across the white kitchen tiles like a freight train, launching his entire weight forward and tackling Jason straight into the center island.
The sound of wood cracking and glass shattering filled the room as the girls let out a sharp, collective scream, clinging to each other in absolute terror.
The arrogant bully had no idea that the man standing over him was about to dismantle his entire life piece by piece.
