Three months later, the bright morning sun streamed through the high floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate living room.
The heavy white sofa and expensive glass tables were gone, replaced by warm oak furniture, colorful children's rug, and shelves filled with toys and storybooks.
Lily sat at a low wooden table in the center of the room, giggling happily as she drew pictures with bright wax crayons.
Lily: Look, Mommy! I drew our house with a big yellow sun above it!
Karen walked into the room carrying two warm mugs of cocoa, setting them down gently on the table.
Karen: That is the most beautiful drawing I've ever seen, sweetheart.
Lily: Is Uncle Thomas coming over today for lunch?
Karen: He sure is. He's bringing the final legal papers for us to sign.
The doorbell chimed softly through the hallway, and Karen walked over to open the heavy oak entrance door.
District Attorney Sterling stood on the porch wearing a comfortable gray suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase under his arm.
District Attorney Sterling: Good morning, Karen. How's the new head of the estate doing today?
Karen: She's doing wonderfully, Thomas. Her night terrors have completely stopped.
District Attorney Sterling: That's the best news I've heard all week.
He stepped into the bright, cheerful living room, setting his briefcase down on the oak dining table.
Karen: How did the sentencing go this morning?
District Attorney Sterling: The judge didn't hold back, Karen. Julian received twelve years in federal prison for wire fraud and child endangerment.
Karen: And Beatrice?
District Attorney Sterling: Five years for felony accessory and tax evasion. Her appeal was denied on the spot.
Karen took a slow, deep breath, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over her heart for the first time in years.
Karen: Justice was served. Finally.
District Attorney Sterling: Every penny of the stolen trust fund has been recovered and placed back into Lily's trust. The company board also voted to name you executive chairperson starting next month.
Karen: Executive chairperson? I haven't run a corporate board in seven years, Thomas.
District Attorney Sterling: You ran circles around Julian's entire legal team in less than forty-eight hours, Karen. The board knows you're the only person with the guts to lead that firm properly.
Lily ran over from her drawing table, wrapping her small arms around Karen's waist with a bright, sunny smile.
Lily: Are you going to be the boss of the giant building downtown, Mommy?
Karen: I am, baby. But my most important job will always be right here taking care of you.
Lily: Good, because I need help drawing the rest of the flowers in our garden!
Karen laughed softly, kneeling down on the warm wooden floor to scoop her daughter into a tight, loving embrace.
The dark shadows of fear and cruelty that had once hung over the marble mansion were gone forever, replaced by the warmth of a mother's fierce, unbreakable love.
