Marcus stepped forward with heavy, deliberate strides, his leather apron rustling sharply against his knees as he towered over the kneeling girl. The crowd around the produce stall muttered nervously among themselves, pulling back to give the furious vendor an unobstructed path. Clara squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for another verbal lash while her fingers brushed against the dusty concrete floor. Marcus didn't hesitate for even a fraction of a second before unleashing his temper.
Marcus: I told you to move faster, you worthless little parasite!
Clara: Please stop! My cheek is already burning!
Marcus: That's just a reminder of what happens when you cross my business!
A sharp slap impact cracked through the morning air like a gunshot, sending Clara reeling sideways onto the asphalt. Before she could recover her balance, Marcus delivered a vicious kick directly into a nearby wooden crate, sending dozens of tumbling apples scattering everywhere. A loud crate crashing sound echoed off the canvas awnings overhead, followed instantly by a heavy thud as several large apples struck Clara directly across her chest and shoulders.
Marcus: ...even walk past good food! Pick them up before I ruin what's left of your dignity!
Clara: Ah...
Clara curled into a tight ball on the ground, one hand clutching her reddened, stinging cheek while the other pressed hard against her aching chest in pure distress. The sharp impact of the flying fruit knocked the wind straight out of her lungs, leaving her gasping for air against the dusty pavement. Marcus stood over her with his hands on his hips, breathing heavily as he admired his own cruelty.
Marcus: That'll teach you to stay out of the merchant district for good.
Shopper: Hey, isn't that going a bit too far over a dropped apple?
Marcus: Mind your own business unless you want your baskets tossed too!
The surrounding shoppers quickly turned their heads away, unwilling to risk the vendor's wrath for the sake of a stranger. Clara lay motionless against the curb, her vision swimming as a low, throbbing pain radiated from her jaw down to her ribs. The brutal assault had crossed a line that could never be unwritten, and the consequences were about to catch up to Marcus faster than he could possibly imagine.
Clara: Dad... please hurry...
Marcus: Keep crying all you want; nobody in this town cares about your sob stories.
Marcus: Now get off my pavement before I call the local cleanup crew to throw you in the dumpster.
Clara's fingers dug into the grit of the street, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs as she struggled to draw a clean breath. The marketplace seemed to spin on its axis, blurring the colorful canvas awnings into streaks of bright yellow and red. She closed her eyes once more, praying for an end to the nightmare that had defined her entire morning.
