Two weeks later, the morning air was crisp and clear as Arthur walked into the high-rise law offices in downtown Chicago.
Sitting across a long glass conference table was Victoria, accompanied by her court-appointed lawyer. She looked worn out, stripped of her expensive jewelry and designer clothes.
Victoria's Lawyer: Mr. Vance, my client is prepared to sign the full dissolution agreement without contesting any terms.
Arthur: Smart choice.
Victoria: Arthur... please. Can't we talk about a small monthly allowance? I have nowhere to live!
Arthur: You have your mother's house in town, Victoria. That's more than enough.
Victoria: I am working as a receptionist at a dentist office! Do you know how humiliating that is for me?!
Arthur: Honesty is never humiliating, Victoria. Striking a child is.
Arthur’s attorney, David, slid a thick black pen across the glass table, pointing to the signature line on the final legal document.
David: Sign here, Miss Victoria. By signing, you surrender all claims to the Vance surname, all estate assets, and agree to a permanent distance of one thousand feet from Lily Vance and the Vance mansion.
Victoria's hands trembled as she picked up the pen. She looked up at Arthur, searching his face for any sign of mercy or past affection, but found only cold, unyielding stone.
Victoria: You really hate me, don't you?
Arthur: I don't hate you, Victoria. Hate takes energy. To me, you are simply a stranger who tried to hurt my child, and now you are gone.
With a shaky signature, Victoria signed her name across the bottom line, pushing the paper back across the table.
David: The divorce is finalized. Good day, Miss Victoria.
Arthur stood up, buttoning his tailored suit jacket, and walked out of the conference room without looking back once.
An hour later, Arthur walked through the front doors of his luxury mansion. The sun was shining brightly through the high glass dome of the foyer, illuminating the spotless white marble floors.
The sound of joyous giggling echoed from the dining hall. Arthur walked in to see Lily and Elena sitting together at the table, baking fresh flour cookies, their hands covered in white dough.
Lily: Daddy! Look! I made a bear cookie!
Arthur: Wow, chief! That looks like a masterwork!
Elena: Welcome home, Mr. Vance. Everything went well in town?
Arthur: Everything is officially over, Elena. The house is entirely ours again.
Lily jumped down from her chair, running over with flour on her nose and hugging her father's legs tightly.
Lily: Is it always gonna be like this now, Daddy?
Arthur: Always, sweetheart. Peaceful, happy, and safe.
Arthur scooped his daughter up in his arms, smiling brightly as Elena brought over a fresh towel to wipe the flour off Lily's face.
For the first time in a very long time, the Vance estate felt like a real home—a place filled with love, respect, and a promise that would never be broken again.
