Marcus guided David into the back seat of his warm sedan, wrapping him in a thick wool blanket.
Leo sat next to Lily in the middle row, sharing his heated seat cushion with her.
Leo: Dad, what are we going to do now? Where are we taking them?
Marcus: We are taking them straight to my house. David needs a warm bed and a doctor immediately.
David: I don't want your charity, Marcus. Your family ruined everything I ever built.
Marcus: This isn't charity, David. This is justice. My father lied to me for twelve years.
Thirty minutes later, the luxury sedan pulled up to a massive stone mansion with iron security gates.
The butler opened the front door, running down the steps with large white towels.
Butler: Sir! Who are these people? Shall I prepare the guest house?
Marcus: Prepare the main guest suite on the second floor right now. Call Dr. Stevens and tell him to bring oxygen and antibiotics.
Butler: Right away, Mr. Vance!
Marcus helped David up the grand carpeted staircase, guiding him into a warm room with a large brick fireplace.
David collapsed onto the plush velvet armchair near the fire, his hands shivering as he took a cup of hot tea from the butler.
Lily: Dad, look at this room! It's bigger than our whole old apartment!
David: Sweetheart, don't touch anything... we don't belong in a place like this.
Marcus: You do belong here, David. In fact, half of everything in this house was paid for with your invention.
Marcus walked over to a heavy oak desk in the corner of the room and pulled out a keycard.
He unlocked a wall safe concealed behind a landscape painting and pulled out a thick black binder.
Marcus: This is my father's private financial ledger from the Vance Family Trust.
David: Why are you showing me that?
Marcus: Because three years ago, before my father died, he placed forty million dollars into a restricted escrow account.
David narrowed his eyes, leaning forward in his chair.
David: Forty million dollars? What for?
Marcus: The trust document states that the money was earmarked for 'The Miller Settlement.' But my stepmother hid these files from me.
David: Your stepmother... Victoria Vance?
Marcus: Yes. She told me the escrow account was empty. She has been drawing interest off your stolen money for three years!
A sharp knock sounded at the open bedroom door.
A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a red silk dress stepped into the room, her eyes cold as ice.
Victoria: Marcus! What are these filthy homeless people doing in my mansion?!
