Aunt Eleanor took a deep breath, smoothing down the lapel of her silk suit as she looked at Gabriel.
Aunt Eleanor: I apologize, Gabriel. I pushed for this marriage because of the corporate merger. I had no idea she was such a nightmare.
Gabriel: You didn't know, Aunt Eleanor. But I should have seen the signs weeks ago.
Aunt Eleanor: What are you going to tell the board of directors in the parlor?
Gabriel: The truth. That the engagement is off, and that Sterling Real Estate doesn't do business with bullies.
Aunt Eleanor: Well said, my boy. Your late mother would be very proud of you today.
Aunt Eleanor turned her warm gaze toward Maya, stepping closer to the young woman.
Aunt Eleanor: Maya, child... are your hands alright from that soup?
Maya: Yes, ma'am... the soup wasn't boiling, it was just warm. I'm okay.
Aunt Eleanor: Go to the kitchen and have Chef Marco give you some burn ointment just in case. And take the rest of the day off with full pay.
Maya: Thank you, Mrs. Eleanor. You are very kind.
Aunt Eleanor smiled softly and nodded to Gabriel before walking out toward the parlor to address the waiting guests.
Attorney Lawson gathered his legal papers, placing them neatly back into his briefcase.
Attorney Lawson: I will draft the formal termination papers for the merger immediately, Gabriel. Expect them on your desk by four o'clock.
Gabriel: Thank you, Lawson. Make sure Victoria's family receives a copy by certified mail.
Attorney Lawson: It will be my absolute pleasure, sir.
